Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

If your are using ADDICTION FX hex screws you will have to slightly enlarge the screw side bobbin
the plated screws do sound pretty good i will be trying the black oxide soon

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Damn it, now I'm having second thoughts on doing the mod, I definetly dont wanna ruin the threading in the pickup

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

The screws I bought appear to be the same diameter and threading as the fillisters, the main difference was that they were a few millimeters longer. I'm probably not the right person to settle this, I do very very sloppy work with my guitars, we need to bring in a professional.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

When i used Addiction-fx hex screws i did not replace screws from a duncan pickup .it was a new pickup i wound, but from the different vendors there are slight differences in the pole piece holes
I only had to increase the diameter of the hole the slightest bit with a drill

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

Hi, do these from Wymore fit perfectly on Duncan pickups?

Interestingly, I brought exactly the same Nickel hex screws as those of Franknfilms', tried to put them into a TB5 and encountered exactly the same problem of idsnowdog's.

I got mine from Wymore. He said they were from Seymour Duncan. Black 0.5" hex screws.

Given yours are same length as your fillisters, interesting they have such a noticable impact. Very different alloy, it seems.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I Bought black hex screws, they are in transit right now... but it seems I'm not gonna be able to use them :S.... wish I'd known this before

It's possible that he may not be getting a consistent supply of the same size screws from his supplier. Or that he tried substituting an alternative size due to supplier unavailability.

idsnowdog says that his hex screws were smaller in diameter...yours too??? Mine were the same if not bigger (by an almost immeasurable amount). The threading appears to be slightly tighter on the hex screws but it is very hard for me to see the difference.

Just to reiterate that these hex screws will not destroy your pickup, here is what I did: I turned them counter until i felt the drop in the treading, then I screwed them in carefully with very little pressure needed. I spun them almost all the way just by twirling my finger around an allen key, I used slightly more force when they got almost all the way in, meaning I actually gripped the key with two fingers but did not need to force anything. If the threading on the bobbin is plastic though I guess it wouldn't take much to shred it.

I'm not sure how we can resolve this, I guess use addiction-fx hex screws at your own risk.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

AFAIK they are using different gauge systems.
The Phillips screws in conventional Duncan pickups are of American gauge #5-40.
The Hex screws from Addiction-Fx are of Metrix gauge M3x20.

I knew that before I brought the hex screws. But I'm not familiar with the conversion between them so I hoped that they could fit, while it turns out that they won't.

All the hex screws I can find in local hardware stores are all of Metrix gauge system. So the problem is where can we find hex screws of American gauge.

It's possible that he may not be getting a consistent supply of the same sized screws from his supplier.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

There's no conflict in our description of the hex screws. The head is bigger than the hole of the bobbin while the "body" is thinner than that of the Phillips.

Yes I knew that I use addiction-fx screws at my own risk so I don't blame on them at all. As I said, I know the gauge difference before I purchased.

I ended up using some hex screws I removed from an Ibanez V7 pickup to try the screw mod, which is smaller than addiction-fx's so that they're too loose on the TB5 and are only held by the magnetic force. The tone difference is not as significant as that in your clips (great clips :fing2:, BTW), and still won't make the TB5 sound good to my taste. So I put the Phillips back. But now your clips make me want to find the right hex screws and give a second trial. :scratchch

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I got a small bag of Addiction FX chrome hex screws. So far, they work for me as a direct replacement for duncan screws without messing up the threads or hanging loose in there. I've been able to swap freely back and forth between duncan stock screws and the addiction fx hex screws without problems.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I'm officially loving the hex screws. I'm playing stuff on this guitar that I haven't played in a long while, mainly super tight palm muted metal. The hex screws added back some clarity and removed the unnecessary thump. I was dreaming of a pickup halfway between custom 8 and custom on rhythm and all custom 8 on lead and this is it!

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

One more LOG clip, more gain this time, now I need to call it a day

In the A/B comparison, to my ears, the hex screws just shifted the the bass/treble to just a hair brighter at the expense of a bit of low end. The crunchtastic Lamb of God riff showed off how nicely it balances with your Genz Benz cabinet though. Very nice tone on that clip!

I am still pretty happy with my stock TB-6 Distortion for my particular rig. :D

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

old thread is old.

but I gotta say, the hex screws made an audible difference. Don't think I'll be doing this mod anytime soon though, cuz the guitar I currently have my C8 in is retardedly bright sounding, so that takes care of any muddiness that might be in the lower notes.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

I didn't really like it. The Custom is already tight, and the hex screws even with a bit looser C8 were just TOO tight/focused/compressed f that makes any sense. I figured that there were too many qualities I liked with the original Custom and just went back to that.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

what I like about the C8 is it's got the evenness of the Custom (albeit with a big muscular low end/low mids), about the same (maybe a bit more) output, but it sparkles, shines, and glimmers in ways that the regular custom does not.

Re: Hex Screws in the Custom 8

was the matter of the size of the hex screws ever settled?

does addiction-fx have the right size or not?
