Hey Lew...Please Tell Me About The Tung Sol 12AX7s?

Lew...Was it these tubes you said you liked? I need some really good modern 12AX7s for my 50 watt Marshall...Are they warm and how's the gain on those?

I'll plug some in this weekend and give 'em a try for you John. I just became a Sovtek dealer and I do have a bunch of the Tung Sol 12ax7's from Sovtek in stock. I have all NOS RCA's in my amps so I rarely try new tubes. But I'll check 'em out for you. The new Tung Sols have been getting good reviews, but I havn't tried them yet. Lew

I have a nice Mullard ECC83 in V1 but I'd like a really good V2 and V3 tube...Something else nice in V1 would be a plus though also....

Recently I bought a gold pin EI,and EH 12AX7,The Sovtek LPS,and a JJ ECC83....One of these tubes is defective though cause I Lost alot of power when I tryed the tube in V1? I Put the original tubes I had in my Marshall before I went PTP and they are fine....I think V2 and V3 are just older Chinese 12AX7Cs though....

I prefer the GT 12AX7M in Marshally amps. The TS is the shiznit if you're looking for smooth gain. If you're looking for something with more aggresive gain, I'd suggest either the EH 12AX7 or a Chinese model.

I'm reading about alot of reliabilty issues with the 12AX7M? I really want to try this tube,but I also notice they are pretty pricey...Have you had good luck and tone from them? The price is anywhere from about $25 a tube or less...I do have the EH 12AX7 and alot of different Chinese 12AX7s which I Know are gainier but brighter also..I do have a Chinese tube in V2 and V3 of my Marshall now and a NOS Mullard in V1....

I am wanting a bit darker and smoother though...

John: I put some of the Tung Sol 12AX7's in a buddies Marshall (over and under input JCM 800) 2204 and they sounded great...pretty smooth sounding tube to be honest...a lot like an original Tung Sol but much more gain. We tried sopme of the Sovtek LPS's as well...we both prefered the Tung Sol...it had a little less gain but overall a much better tone.

FWIW, he put these tubes in it because his 3 or 4 month old GT 12AX7M's dies...2 of them at the same time!

Also, on my recomendation "B Bent" from this forum put 4 new Tung Sols in his VHT Pitbull and he loves them as well!

Best price I have found is 15 bucks a pop and I have not seen them any higher than 17 each. Thetubestore.com sells them for $14.95 or 69.75 for 5 of them...they have the best deal around.

nicer is thier reproduction of the old MULLARD box for thier reissue of the 5AR4 rectifier tube...my favorite rectifier tube. Lew

I'm using the new Tung-sol pre-tubes in an amp I'm working on. I tried Sovteks, GT-Mullards, Ei's, JJ's... in the end the TS's had the best balance of gain and fullness, without coloring any one tone spectrum too much. Give em a try...

Thanks Christian....See this is the reason I've not sprung for these Mullard "wannabees".....I'm reading alot about these reliability problems...The Tung Sols sound like something I might try and I'll buy them from my buddy Lew...

I hear ya...I reall like them in my buddys 2204 but 2 of them stopped working inside of 4 months...add to that a price tag of nearly $25 most places...no way!

I've got several Mullard copies from Groove Tubes and they work fine. I got them from Todd at Revolution. Maybe he tests his better than other outlets.

I did so reading on the WWW after my buddys fried...it looks like if you bought some of the first ones you got good tubes after a short while the quality took a dump...how long have you had the ones you have?

I also read that about the early series....Still $25 is alot of money for any modern 12AX7s in my opinion,especially if they'll have crappy longevity.

+1. I have a group of the GT12AX7M's that work well for me. I didn't know there were such issues with performance until now.

No probs with the half dozen or so 12AX7Ms I've used. OTOH, I buy from Lord Valve so the tubes are tested pretty rigorously.

When I hear "dark & smooth", I think JJ.
