High E String Slipped, Need Help

I have a new high end, limited edition Dean Custom Run DCR #8 ML Switchblade #30 of 100. My high E String some how slipped between the fretboard binding and the frets. Got the string out without any problems. Was still in tune, plays great and sounds great. Is there any possibility I have a fret problem? These are the best dressed and polished frets I've played. This is my first guitar with neck/fretboard binding.

Re: High E String Slipped, Need Help

Can you post pics of where it slipped so we can see if a fret has popped up?
If it has I'd be contacting Dean..

Re: High E String Slipped, Need Help

i would contact dean since thats exactly what it sounds like. you could fix it yourself but if you just got it, id have them do it

Re: High E String Slipped, Need Help

Sounds like they did the "binding over the fret ends" thing, which is actually shorter frets and extra binding over the edge of the board, as opposed to binding actually covering the fret ends. If not done exactly right, there will be a gap between the binding and the fret end, facilitating the problem you describe.

Unless you mean it wend under the fret end, over the edge of the board.

Either way, it's an issue Dean needs to correct.

Re: High E String Slipped, Need Help

What you might have is a humidity problem. You might want to check the Relative Humidity in your house. Get one of the small digital hygrometers from Planet Waves, Taylor (or one from a cigar shop) and leave it in the case with the guitar for a couple of days. You're looking for a a RH between 45--55%. There are several products you can use to add moisture; or you can use silica gel packets from shipping cartons to reduce the RH.

RH that's too low or too high can be a serious problem for acoustic guitars, but many players don't recognize that it can create fingerboard issues on any guitar...even a solid body.

'Tis the season to be aware of RH issues, as the cold weather brings furnaces and wood stoves into play and your house can dry out in a hurry.

Pretty guitar. Good luck!

Bill I have a huge humidity problem in my house. I looked at the frets and they seem fine, but I'm no expert. It plays and sounds great.

Re: High E String Slipped, Need Help

If you have the binding over the fret ends, like Gibson LPs, then there is a slight gap between the fret and the binding. This is a real pet peeve of mine with Gibson.

It can be easily fixed by filling in that gap with multiple layers of super glue until it is completely filled. Then smooth it out with a file and sandpaper.
