Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

flank

dig it, i found a 70s hiwatt custom 100 (600$)and marshall 1960A cab ($400)

how much do hiwatts from the 70s go for? could i find one cheaper? and how do you think it would sound bein put through the marshall cab? ive played through a hiwatt but never really got to crank it and i dont remember the model, these things run EL34s right? what are their sonic characteristics? are they loud like a marshall?

just any info would be helpful.....thanks buddies

this is a 2 input hiwatt if that makes any differnce (which ive read that 2 inputters have a little more gain than 4 input versions)

Ive heard that old hiwatt heads are extremely loud! Ask mrid, hes got one if he hasnt sold it yet, but he'll still be able to tell you all about it.

$600 is a good price for that head, since they usually go for around $850. The cab is an average price, probably worth it.

Unless you have a rehearsal space and earplugs, you may want to reconsider buying a 100W Hiwatt. They're actually a lot louder than a 100W Marshall. People even joke about it.
It's a clean Pete Townsend type tone that is loud enough to
make you permanently sterile! LOL

ive been readin up on the hiwatt forum and all things point out that there is almost no differnce between a 2 and 4 input, other than somethin with one of the tubes on the 2 input, which results in a bit more breakup earlier.......other than that, they sound the same.......hmmmmm

I cranked the DR201....I could not even hear myself yell...but strangely my ears did not ring afterwards...I am still puzzled...not that I will do it again and be any where close to the amp again;)

Re: Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

is that the DR201 a 200 watt version? phew..... :saeek:

Re: Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

turns out it is from 1981....serial 15898.......and its a DR103S.......which means its a David Gilmour model DR103, however, i dont know what the differnce is between it and a standard DR103

Re: Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

ok, so the DR103S is the gilmour model one....... the differnce is that there is a footswitch for a boost, and some kind of balance knob that allows one to blend the normal and bright inputs to however they want.......other than that, its a DR103

Re: Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

UPDATE....well this thing is a monster for sure, huge bass and actually really nice crunch with the right settings....and it definately had the headroom.....i didnt really go past 5 on the volume either, i cant imagine on 7 or 8......... i definately am gonna snatch it up, its rock n roll

Re: Hiwatt and marshall cab for a grand?

Good choice, it's definitely plenty loud. I can't imagine getting one after I got a refund on a broken 200w Sound City head. I realized that was an omen and that these amps have too much power for their own good. 80w of H&K is enough to make the paint peel so that's where I draw the line. :D

I think it has a pretty amazing sound and with pedals it can do wonders. If I could have one Hiwatt, I'd get an early 70s DR504, because 50watts is just much more reasonable.

And yes, there is quicker breakup on 2 input Hiwatt amps as compared to the 4 input ones.
