Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

yeah, thanks all for the input!! i just always heard that a way to tell a good guitar is by the way it resonated and all unplugged. And, yeah, some of my guitars DEF go by this rule of thumb.. But this particular one sounds crummy and thin unplugged but roars plugged up, even with stock pups.. Guess I wont write it off and just plug it up everychance I get!!

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

My 88 lp custom sounds like fecal matter acoustically. A pair of Seth's saved it.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

I like it to be loud and clear unplugged..especially a strat.
Moisture, glue, tree sap, grade c wood with knots, thick new lacquer...makes it sound dull unplugged and heavier.
Give me the dry one made from premium wood with a thin paint job.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

(sorry, I don't know how to do the multiple quote thing)

I would have thought 'I wouldn't want to work with an electric guitarist who had never played their guitar acoustically' would have been a more logical paraphrase.

Regardless, you speak often of your playing and your theories about it, but not once have i been able to hear it (unless I'm mistaken, in which case please point me towards the location of an example). It doesn't have to be an album-quality example, a rough recording from a gig or some aimless noodling at home would be enough. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear how your oft-mentioned playing and tone actually sounds like when it enters our ears rather than our eyes. Thanks in advance.

I avoid those like the plague. They sound like turds to me amplified.

And this is when the SDUGF found out why there is so much gear-flipping with happy buyers and sellers :)

Well cricket boy, here's the thing, regardless of what each of our playing level is, or style of music, or favorite tones, we are all entitled to our own opinions. There is more than you and the people who agree with you. If you happen to be a better player than me, does that mean I'm supposed to chuck everything and get the gear you have and play the kind of music you do? Do you puff out your chest? On the other hand, if I'm a better player than you, do you concede defeat and imitate me? No on both counts, so what's your point? We're not going to change what we do because of someone else, and how good a player is, or isn't, has nothing to do with it. There's a lot of great players who I respect, but do not want to sound or play like. Millions of guitarists worldwide and many different approaches, there's room for them all. Most of us here have different favorite bands and guitarists, and with that comes different preferences in tones. This ain't the military baby, we're civilians and trying to get us all going in the same direction is like herding cats. The American spirit. What some of the geniuses here forget is that it's like dating sites, there's no guarantee that the clips anyone posts are really them playing. If you post a clip of some impressive guitarwork, how do we know it's you, either on the audio or video. It's pretty easy to fake ('Gosh, why would someone fake anything on the internet?'). You don't have to prove anything to me, no one here has to prove anything to anyone else. If you are a better player than someone, have you earned the right to be condescending and arrogant to them? I certainly don't do that to other guys, and wouldn't do it to you, tempting as it may be. Music's about enjoyment and self expression. No one else decides what we should like.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

All we want is to hear your vaunted playing and tone, sir.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

Fwiw, I've posted a bunch of video clips of my crap playing over in the Riffmaster thread. Of course, that's in Tips and Clips, which explains why you haven't seen them.

First off...what a lame excuse.

Second...you've shot your mouth off plenty around here over the years about almost anybody who ever sported a Fender. Don't even try and pretend you haven't.

Not saying I haven't, I'm saying why I did. What, are you on your period?

Oh I'm skewered by you rapier wit.

What I'm saying is for years you've come off as a know-it-all and when asked to provide a clip of your brilliance you've been conspicuously silent.

I think you're all talk and I'm saying it to your face.

EDIT: apologies to Bloodrose for gumming up your thread.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

Jesus, how hard is it? You don't have anything to prove. Meander on over to the Riffmaster thread, as previously mentioned, and get a gander of my bad timing, bad tone, and bad playing. If I'm willing to let it all hang out in this company, there's no way you don't have something to bring to the goddamned table. I just want to hear it. A dude who is as established and gigs as often as you shouldn't have a problem putting up one friggin clip, quality be damned. Hell, it'd be nice to just HEAR some of the mag swap combos you've come up with before taking the plunge.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

Yeah, mang. Put up a clip of those P-90's I sent you. I'd like to hear what you do with 'em. No judgment; I'm really curious.

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

I have never once heard a guitar that sounded bad unplugged but great plugged in...I have however met a few guys that had convinced themselves that they had see or heard that and oddly enough every time it was their guitar...

Sure, these are electric guitars but take a nice sounding guitar, we'll use a Strat for this example and dump all parts and pickups into a junk body and neck then play that...no way in hell it'll sound the same...now, maybe you want to say it doesn't sound a good maybe you want to just say it sounds different...that's a matter of opinion in most cases but in my opinion junk wood that doesn't ring and has no tone unplugged leads to a guitar that sounds like crap plugged in too.

I do subscribe to trying guitars unplugged and always practice that...in fact I almost never plug in guitars when I am testing and many times I plug in a guitar for the first time after I've bought it!

Wow...I should have read the second page before posting.

I could save all you guys the trouble...

Rick won't post any clips of his playing or his tone...I've asked several times and gotten no reply, in fact he won't even say why he won't he just skates past it.

Rick is an old guy with zero tech savvy and has no earhtly idea how to do it. Never used MP3, Ipods, etc. I'm working on it.

You cats must think I'm 17 or something...

I don't own an iPod, hate MP3's and my idea of a home studio is a Tascam unit that runs on cassette tapes!

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

Ill check out that riffmaster thread Formula73.. thanks for the heads up!!

Re: Hmm.. Guitar sounds like crud unplugged, WOW plugged...??

My LP sounds so-so unplugged more the lower end just sound kind of dead but plugged in man it is a righteous guitar, especially with PoorMan's PAF-ish pups in it

I´m the exact same way. The store doesn´t have my rig and the pickups in the instrument are (tonally) irrelevant anyway. She will either sing to me acoustically or go barking up someone else´s tree ;)
