Hmmm... decisions, decisions... Build as is, or finish?

It's a poplar body, has a few scuffs on it, but nothing serious. I know poplar isn't supposed to age well, but the grain on it is really quite nice... It is already sealed.

If I do finish it, I'm thinking of something from the Duplicolor catalog... like a dark metallic blue, or maybe a pewter or charcoal grey...

The rest of the plan is a maple/ebony neck, chrome hardware, and Lace Alumitone pickups...

I think that's a lovely body . . . I'd want to see the grain on it.

Re: Hmmm... decisions, decisions... Build as is, or finish?

As much as I like Duplicolor, that's some decent grain.

Please, please, please don't cover that beautiful grain...

I'd say natural or transparent, too.

Clear coat, it is. If the poplar ages badly, I can put a solid finish over it.

If it's sealed and you do a proper clear coat, it should last forever.

Any product suggestions? I won't have my air compressor handy for a while... Not sure wipe-on poly is the way to go with this one.

Rattle can lacquer. Deft or Duplicolor.

If the Ebony is Jet black then I would vote for charcoal grey. If the Ebony is not jet black and has some brown/light streaks in it then I would leave natural. That is probably the nicest looking Poplar I've seen.

Yeah, not bad for a $50 ebay find, eh? :naughty:

Here's the backside:

Needs a little finishing, still - routing out the control cover ledge, for instance. Might add a battery pocket, and use EMGs instead of the Alumitones...

Anybody know where I can get the sharkfin control cavity covers? I need a few of 'em.

I don't know if its feasible or not, but that top would look awesome with some southwest style artwork...the top left contour looks perfect for a sun/moon and the strata wood grain in the middle could make for a nice mountain side...maybe I just see things differently...lol

How well would the Alumitones work if I did this as a baritone? I don't have a bari in my collection, and this is one possibility to add it.

Clear Gloss Nitrocellulose...that's a nice looking body and should have the grain on display.
