Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

Hi folks -

The photos below show what is purported to be a Gibson Les Paul Studio I bought off the 'Bay, as a DIY.

The serial number belongs to a '98 Les Paul Studio, which would have the dot inlays - which this has.

But the finish is a thin satin finish. The top is actually an extremely dark green.

The serial number could be genuine/original/correct and the finish be evidence of a previous owner's unfinished project work.

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

*nods* I'm wavering between getting it refinished (again), or going ahead and playing it like it is... I've got the vast majority of the parts (I think - I need a set of Grovers (which are on the way)), and the control covers... and that's it. I think I've got everything else.

If the finish does bother you, then go ahead and re-do it before you put the parts back in it. If not, then put it all back together and enjoy it !

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

If the finish is thin, tuis may be a great candidate for sandin and staining, assuming the grain is nice. Some nice uncommon color like dark brown or something to that effect... Just my opinion.

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

What do you dislike about the current finish? The colour or the fact that it is satin rather than gloss? A good buffing may be all that is required.

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

From the photos it looks like someone went a bit crazy with some steel-wool or a scotch pad .... If I were in your shoes I'd sand it all back and have some fun !

you are a brave man. out of curiosity - was this over say, $200?

Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

With non-Gibson HSC, and TonePros Kluson style tuners, $325, including shipping.

For pups, I've got either a pair of Pearly Gates or '59s to put in...

I was thinking along the lines of getting this done to it:

Huh.

That gorgeous blue might hafta wait - after applying some polish, some elbow grease, and some internet sleuthery, I think I have something: I believe it's one of the Les Paul Studios done with the Gem colors after they were discontinued.

The scratches were hiding the fact that the back is green as well - not black.

So, chrome or gold hardware? :33:

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

I love green and gold, yet since you also like blue and chrome, perhaps it's more you to go with chrome? Black could also be interesting.

Would like to see pics of the polished instrument! Are you gonna do anything more to the finish?

Re: Hmmm... What to do about a Les Paul Studio?

Green and gold is great as long as it's not gaudy (I've seen it happen), but generally that's a great combo.

Here she is, back from the shop:

Matt Eady (of Eady Guitars) did a fantastic job on her. :-)
