HNGD Epi Wildkat

I like P90s in (semi) hollowbody guitars. But I couldn’t become friends with the Epi Casino I had. It was a nice one, made in Korea, factory equiped with a Bigsby (cool!) and although the sound was killer and the neck was to die for, the limited upper fret access turned me down on that guitar. I sold it and kept my eyes open for something with better acces to the higher regions. About two weeks ago I bumped into a second hand Epiphone Wildkat. It’s quite a different guitar than the casino. More sort of a thinline. But i liked the way it felt, so I took her home.

Sound wise the neck and bridge pickups were out of balance. The neck pickup overpowered the bridge pickup. I solved this with a dogear shim from Lollar. With the shim installed, and a little tweaking with the pole pieces, the balance is next to perfect.

Something else regarding sound; I read about people finding their Wildkats sounding too dark for their taste due to crappy wiring; my Wildkat doesn’t sound that dark to me, I won’t touch the electronics for the time being. The DC resistance is quite high though, about 11.7 kOhm per pickup. The Fender Blues Deluxe can stay pretty clean (ish) but they do drive my Marshal 2266C nicely :-)

Tremolo wise the Bigsby has to be used with care, dive bombs are out of the question. But I’m not a heavy trem user anyway, with my use I experience hardly any tuning issues. At least not enough to bother me and start looking for a roller bridge.

I’ll try to make some sound clips the coming days for a brief impression… so here are the pics :-)

looks great! glad you found something you like and were able to get the sound to balance out which can be tricky with dogears

A $50 roller bridge from Schaller will alleviate your tuning troubles. I've done this on a number of instruments for my clients, and all love the results.

Congrats. Wildkats are pretty cool.
They're constructed like a Johnny A: the back & sides are carved from a single block of mahogany - no seams.
Their tops are solid wood, not molded plywood like the ES guitars.
Neck profile is nice and chunky for an Epi, too.

I've never had a problem with any of the Epiphone headstock designs, but that humungous logo really bothers me...reminds me of the 50's cheap import guitar logos. But I still love the guitars even with the logo.

Actually I prefer this headstock shape to the typical huge Epi headstock :-)
