Holy Grail '59 STD. -what part myth/rarity vs. playing/tone?

Re: Holy Grail '59 STD. -what part myth/rarity vs. playing/tone?

that's why Strads go for up to several mil!:

Exactly, but I was referring to craftmenship. I'm not a violinist, nor do I pretend to know anything about violins, but I've been told the Strads are just leaps and bounds better than pretty much anything else out there due to the craftmenship. The same cannot be said about a 59 LP, mainly b/c there's no mystery behind the making of those.

It's the same thing as with the LP...there ARE violins that are made every bit as well, and some might even dare to say better. At the end of the day it's cause of the whole combo in the Strad violins, and mainly the wood he used, which was cut from trees that had suffered through exceedingly cold winters for 20 years or so, and the growth rings are more tightly spaced than in any trees being cut after his time.

The wood's not the issue with '59 Lps...they only sold 300 of them that year. The rarity is what drives the price, and the fact that some (NOT all) believe that the '59 was the perfect combo of parts...jumbo frets, big neck, flame-ish maple, sunburst finish, PAFs...once again it's the whole combo, and not cause there's some ethereal, other-worldly quality about them.

Okay-heres the deal. Ive got a dear friend who is considering selling his '59 STD . Tiger striped Les paul to buy a Ranch in Texas.
He's not a collector, he's a player, so take that into considertion. He loves to play that guitar.
What i would like to know is what part of that guiatr value is due to the rarity(1000 ever made) and the mythical staus and waht part is due to the craftsmanship , playability, and tone?
Im assuming that the old world craftsmanship of these '59's are akin to the modern day equivalent of the Stradavarius Viloins, and that the tone therefore is equally as beautiful.
Then , I am also wondering waht value is placed relative to the rarity and mythological status of the guitar..?

A little help please? thanks

Does your friend not have an automaticvetofinancialadviserwhohasfinalsayinallthingsfiscalespeciallywhenitcomestoguitarsversushouses accompanying him on his journey through life?

Because if he does, one imagines the question is moot...

uh..heh..ugghh..heh heh..
He,s not rich enough to buy the ranch outright without dipping into his retiremenet fund. The ranch is 1.3 Mil.
I don't see him selling the '59.
It aint his style. Still that ranch that was just offered him borders his other ranch.
So he wants it. Poor guy, guess he'll just have to make do with his measley 260 acre ranch.I feel sorry for him, I really do.

Re: Holy Grail '59 STD. -what part myth/rarity vs. playing/tone?

'59 Les Paul is not comparable to custom-made violins. Old PRS's are more like it.
Just play every LP-style axe you can, and then the '59, and then do it again some times, and do your own conclusions.

im not sure id put an old prs on the same level as a '59 either

Jerry, I'm a little confused...are you wondering if you should buy the guitar? What I got from the original post was that you were trying to help your friend figure out the worth in general.

At any rate, I'd say have the thing appraised by a reputable source, get a ballpark figure and let your friend decide from there. $1.3 million for a spread of land isn't outrageous (especially Texas ranches, and one that borders his). The guitar may fetch a decent portion...enough to make a loan seem a little more reasonable afterwards. If the guitar comes with the "____ played this once " kind of story, it may even get more at an auction.

No Sir, thheres no way on earth I could afford that guitar.
I want a Les Paul , but I cannot even afford a decent regular model right now.
The dude who owns it has the first dollar he ever made. Hes tight as a rock, so i really do not see him selling the '59.
Actually, he,s got two ranches, the 260 acre one that borders the one he wants to buy, and another 138 acre one thats worth over a million, so he was talking about selling that 138 acres to but the ranch bordering his other ranch, but he doesnt want to because that 138 acre one is really really gorgeous. So much for his problems. Aweful arent they?

Yeah, I'm in the same boat: I'm considering using my unemployment check to finish my upper-body tattoo, but I want to do a guitar project. In the meantime I'm paying the electric and rent along with buying food. So, I'm juggling a little bit of financial decision making. I'll probably just start selling dope and keep collecting unemployment, that way I'll have some "mad money" to throw around.
