Hot pickup for les paul.

Hey guys, hope your doing well.

I currently have a Epiphone Les paul standard pro. It is a good guitar for the price but I want better pickups for it. I want a hot pickup because I play a lot of hard rock and metal.

Could anyone please give me any recommendations for a good neck and bridge humbucker. Thanks guys.

Also, I have a Orange Crush Pro 60w.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

I've used a Distortion set in my LP for a couple years now, and I recommend them. Another good choice is the Black Winter set.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

Thanks for your reply I was considering the distortion set but I'm not too sure.

Also, anyone had much experience of the black winter humbucker.

The Distortion set is a good way to go. I have also really enjoyed the Custom and Jazz combination, and that would probably be more versatile if you want that. Dont be afraid of lower output pickups in the neck spot, the jazz or 59 with an a4 magnet have been great for me.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

Maybe we can narrow down the right model for the guy before we start changing his magnets?

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

I can't think of a better pick up than the Custom for the bridge.

Neck, take your pick, I really the A2 Pro.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

My favorite pairing is currently a Custom in the bridge and a Slash neck.

I only said an A4 59 because the stock 59 is just too boomy in a Les Paul. I dont really post on here much, but trust me I wont start recommending swapping magnets on everything. The 59 is the only pickup I believe really needs a magnet change, and I cant recommend it without the change in a Les Paul.

I think his comment was justified. The 59 is a reasonably good pup, but as he said, it tends to be boomy in some LPs. I also find it to be thin and trebly sounding because of the mid-scoop. A different magnet cures the ills of the stock 59.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

Either the Dist. or the Custom in the bridge. Leave them stock if you like a shrill high end. Use an A8 if you like perfection. Use an A2 if you like heaven.

Demon in the neck.

I definitely agree the stock 59 is too boomy in most Les Pauls. A mag swap would cure that.

Of course, some people do not want to swap magnets. If that were the case I would suggest getting an Alnico II Pro or Jazz humbucker for the neck position instead of a 59. The only difference between those pickups is the magnet: the Jazz is a bit thinner with more treble and the A2P is more well rounded (more bass, more mids and a touch less treble) than the Jazz. The Jazz has an Alnico V and the A2P of course has an Alnico II magnet.

For the type of music the OP wants to play though, I agree with Doc. Get a Screamin' Demon for the neck.

I really don't like what an A8 does to a custom or demon, it just sounds abrasive and harsh to my ears. And not in a good way.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

the nazgul/pegasus with sentient set is cool, especially u are dropping down to drop c and below... otherwise alot of people have recommended to me the black winters... but i have no experience sadly, the distortion and jb in the bridge with a jazz or 59 in the neck is also a great combo, u really get good versatility with lower output pups in the neck, and a very smoothe sound when soloing under lots of gain, and if u just want crazy output the blackouts are pretty crazy... would not recommend emgs, they suck compared to blackouts.

Re: Hot pickup for les paul.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure about the blackouts how are active pickups compared to passive. But I do like the black winters

Good choice on the Slash neck. Deciding between the Distortion and the Custom is all in how you want it to react. If you want a big punchy low end, and more open, growling mids, go with the Custom. If you'd rather have a tighter bass response, more compression, and really full mids that cut through anything, that's the Distortion.
