hot rodded '59?

Looking for Real Life
well, the 59 isn't givin me enough output, but i love the tone, so is there any way to modify the pickup to have more output & not alter the tone? And yes i know a pickup booster exists, but i'd rather not use one. Also, how much output can i expect from doing such modifications?

also, does a pickup like this already exist? I've heard the custom is kinda like a 59, and i know the lil 59 has more output, but i'm sure both are EQ'd differently.

Re: hot rodded '59?

The Duncan Custom sounds real similar to 59 tonewise when listening to the clips on the seymour website. It sounds like the 59 but beefed up imo.

Re: hot rodded '59?

The Custom is supposed to be a beefed up PAF, so that might be one way to go. Another option might be the Screamin Demon, also supposed to be a hopped up 59.

Re: hot rodded '59?

The C5 will probably be closer to the '59 as opposed to the Custom as they both have Alnico V magnets. The other thing you might try is a Screamin' Demon. As far as physically modding a pickup... that is very difficult to do anything beyond swapping magnets.

Re: hot rodded '59?

I heard that the Custom 5 has way less mids compared to the 59. I wouldnt ever touch a Custom 5 for that reason alone.

Not way less mids, just more highs and lows, making it appear as if it's more scooped than a 59.

Re: hot rodded '59?

Get a C5...Called "The 59 on steroids"....The C5 doesn't have "alot less mids"...It's a great pickup and doesn't lack anything actually..

Re: hot rodded '59?

i thought it was called the mix between a custom & custom custom?

and i really don't want any EQ changes, well, maybe a little more bottom end

Re: hot rodded '59?

Next up from the '59 is the Screamin Demon. A sometimes overlooked but really excellant pickup, IMO. Lew

Re: hot rodded '59?

well, demon looks like, well, what I'm NOT looking for

the tone chart, well, it looks like it has less lows & more highs than a 59

I'm looking for the opposite

how accurate is that thing, anyways?

Re: hot rodded '59?

well, custom 5 looks like its it

more lows, less highs, more output

and

"Think of the Custom 5 as a higher output SH-1 ’59 with a deeper bottom end and expanded output. "

thanks guys

Re: hot rodded '59?

The 59/Custom Hybrid might be perfect for you... it combines the vintage response of the 59 with the punch of the Custom 5

Re: hot rodded '59?

Don't forget to try a wide variety of magnets too. There's not just A2, A5 and ceramic. There's A3 and A4 too.

My opinion, the Alnico 3 is the ideal magnet for vintage tone, like an overwound PAF. It's clear and articulate like an Alnico 2 but has more low-mid woof to it. You keep the shimmer but get a little extra beef.

If you want the ideal combination between Alnico 5 and 2, Alnico 4 is it. Alnico 4 is closer to 2 output-wise, but closer to 5 tone-wise.

At least that's how these ears "see" it...

Re: hot rodded '59?

From what my ears have told me, the custom would be your bet.

Brother Empty....Do you ever get a chance to actually play your guitar? You've got all candles burning at both ends! If only to be 17 again and have your energy! LOL.. :laugh2:

You sure jump around from amp to guitar to pickups....LOL...

The C5 is the 59 on steroids and the pickup you'll need to try next...

Might I ask why not? You want to increase the output, yet not affect the eq. You're kind of saying, "Can you tell me what to use to pound in nails? I don't want to use a hammer." The SD pickup booster is designed to do specifically what you're looking for. Why not use one?
