Hotter humbuckers and dynamics...discuss

The most interesting hot pickup I have fallen in love with lately is the Schecter Heretics. They combine a ceramic and an A5 giving me the power and punch I love while retaining that alinco bloom and dynamics. I would love to have MJ wind me a Black Winter set replacing one of the ceramics with an A5. You can have it all.

I've been so curious about those Schecter pups but haven't had a chance to try them out myself. Their pickups seem to be very underrated...

Yeah, I was talking more like higher than 15k or so. They tend to get specialized or sound good for One Specific Thing.

Yeah, any high output pickup that was invented after the invention of the master volume amplifier always seem to be really niche.

I don't think they're THAT niche. There's still a variety of genres where a slightly compressed mid-focused high output pickup is desirable.

I played a Pop Punk gig on a Nazgul, FWIW.

When I think of dynamics I think of how the pickup reacts when I change how I'm picking and the intensity of my picking. If it sounds like "on 10" no matter what I do, that's not dynamic. Some high output pickups do react well to playing dynamics, such as the Super Distortion and I think the JB does as well. Both of those are classic designs though before master volume tube amps which didn't have the high gain circuitry we have today. They needed to hit the amp hard to get "more" out of them but also be tamable. For the last several years I've preferred medium output and even PAF style bridge pickups. They fit my style better and if I need more drive for something, I can get it from my amp or stomp on an overdrive pedal.
