how about Randall amps?

I need a back up for my 5150 head....or i may posiblly A/B another head for cleans, but i can't afford anything much over 400 bucks. It will prolly have to be a solid state amp. What about the Randall RH100 head..or any other Randall heads? I hear they over heat really bad. I was looking into the Peavey XXL head also. I just need something that will give me good cleans...and a nice distortion close to something like the 5150. Or anything for hard rock. What would make a good back-up head?

Re: how about Randall amps?

Look for a Randall RG 100 ES, great SS head. Reliable as anything, cheap, make an excellent back up.

Re: how about Randall amps?

The rehershal hall I used to jam at had Randall's and Marshall's
in the rooms. The Randell's for a S.S. amp didn't sound half bad.
The reverb was nice and lush sounding, And tone wise they gave the
Marshall's ....*Disclaimer (in this studio ) a run for it's money.

* the owner or this studio was a drummer. As long as the amp powered
up and sound came out you where good to go :saeek: He could care less
about the amps tone. :yell:

Re: how about Randall amps?

I might give Randall a try...cause i am thinking of getting a solid state instead of a tube for realiabilty reasons. Nobody in my band plays guitar ...so they don't care about my guitars tone either. In fact when we recorded last weekend my guitar sounded like a harpsicord on steroids...cause the guy recording doesn't ususally record for us and he didn't know what he was doing....and they said it sounded good. I wanted to retire as a guitar player and just play the bagpipes when i heard that. This is what i get for being a guitar player. Sad what the world is coming too.

Re: how about Randall amps?

My best friend has the Randall RH-200 half stack and it rips for a solid state amp. You can nail tons of metal tones (think metallica, tool, sabbath). I don't know how it compares to the 5150, but it is a great amp for metal/hard rock, IMO.

But, to answer your question, Randall would probably be a good bet, whether it be the rg or rh series.

Peace.

G.I.

Re: how about Randall amps?

Yeah that head has been disco'd for ages. You'd have to pick one up used. I finally just sold mine after about 15 years of service. I can't comment too much on the newer Randall stuff but the old stuff was bomb-proof.
