and not really all that much

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

Some are very nice guitars, got to play them on a guitar by guitar basis though because they vary.

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

Yeah, I've had them that were really good and some that I couldn't trade away fast enough. I have 2 Epi LP's and a 2 jr's (set neck jr's) and an SG. They are all pretty good. Not in my Hamer class, but pretty darn good!
That one in the picture is gorgeous!!!!

Yeah.

I think Robert Palmer said it as such:

"A pretty face don't make no pretty heart
I learned that buddy, from the start"

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

Agreed. Quality is hit and miss. I'm not gonna say they are bad but I don't like them myself. The paintjobs look cheap as do the rest of the parts. Sitting next to a Gibson Les Paul they just look cheap. Truthfully there have been a handful of Epiphones I thought about buying. Really in the end nothing is like a real Les Paul if that's what you want.

yeah, but you need a real job to get a real les paul

and i'm living off of about $700 a month & working 60 hours a week to get it

so my plan is to get an edwards or maybe a loverock to hold me over

but man... that thing is so pretty. If i had a custom shop les paul it would look like that

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

My epi dot has awesome wood. The rest is arse. Pickups, tuners, bridge, need to be replaced with 'quality' parts. But i played it 'unplugged' next to a proper es335, same set up, string hight, guage everything and the epi sounded as good, if not better. Also had a nicer/fatter neck/fretboard. Hit and miss

Urban Myth. Even the wood isnt as good.

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

I dig all my Epi's.

Nothing wrong with them after some mods, IMHO.

If you're buying one, play all that you can get your hands on and choose the best one.

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

my brothers epi was the worst guitar i have ever played untill i set it up and then fell in love with it...

You gave me this crazy idea! I'm thinking... forum guitar give away maybe? It's going to take a lot of appeal to make that happen! You never know.

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

I used to own an older vintage sunburst version of that guitar, i really loved it. Friend of mine SDUGF bro Mclaughy has one in a rare natural finish flame top, beautiful guitar. If you want a les paul and don't want to pay over a grand, i would suggest getting one.

However, i really hate that cherry sunburst finish with that flame. And you may want to switch the Pups out for duncans.

man if you wanna give away a guitar, i just wanna say, that i'm totally willing to help you out on the whole 'getting a free guitar' end of things

i play rock & roll if that helps

and if it's a good les paul i'd prolly give away my strat

that could be kinda cool, like start a chain of guitar giving

Good thing you let him know.... he was under the mistaken impression that his guitar sounded good.

Drew, look at them for what they are.... ~$500 guitars. Go play them until you find a good one, and consider what you're getting for that amount of money. Guys who buy Gibbys will tell you that there honestly is $1500 worth of difference in the quality. I have a vintage Gibby SG/LP, and I've played Epis that could definitely hold their own playability wise with it, though it still sounds better. Bear in mind that it's got real PAFs, and if I sold one of the pickups, I could probably buy 10 of the nicest Epi SGs I could find.

Re: how bad are epiphones really?

I think you should take advantage of the weakened economy, save up, and grab a Gibson LP Std or Custom at a big loss to the seller. Then be smart and keep it. Develop that method of collecting guitars, and you'll only have to buy once, rather than sifting through midline stuff for too many years. Just my 2 cents.

yeah man see that's the thing

i'm getting kinda tired of having medioXcore stuff

like i have a strat, but it's MIM

a tele, but it's MIK

a gretsch, but it's no 6120

a LP ish guitar, but it still has laminate, thick poly, for some reason only 3 friggin knobs which bugs the hell out of me, and cheap electronics

i mean, i like all my stuff, but it's like man... if i sold 3 of em & just had one good les paul, i'd probably be better off

but usually it takes me at least 6 months to save for a guitar, so a LP standard at this point, with the stock pickups & all would happen in about a year & a half
