how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

A tube amp.

As was suggested before, try buying one on Ebay from America and having it shipped to you. Much cheaper than buying one locally.

I cannot pay for tube one.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Nothing can get you there but a Marshall as far as I'm concerned. If they're expensive, buy used. Put a Dimarzio Super Distortion in your strat and crank up a Marshall and there you go.

I cannot pay even for a used one man it´s really hard here in Brasil . Can´t you help me to get the sound with my amp?

In my opinion? No. I'm willing to bet that a lot of the other guys here will say the same thing.

What is your budget for a new amp?

I don´t have any money to buy a new amp ,but i have a tube preamp and i think that it can solve my problem right now.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

It will help, but it still has to go through the modeling. Any straight up solid state, non-modeling amps around? Old Peaveys or Randalls? Blackstars do the Marshall thing well too and are alot cheaper than Marshalls. I have the same problem, I play through a modeler direct at church and am never happy with my sound.

actually i really like the sound of the line 6, i think that is a really natural sounding amp . I just wanna some help to reach the adrian´s tone.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Hey guys , i was looking for a noise gate pedal, because putting the tube preamp in the front of the amp generates a lot of noise. What pedal you suggest me?

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Easy- I've been able to cop very convincing (classic) Adrian smith tones on a budget.

1- MUST have a DiMarzio uper Distortion in the bridge of your guitar-very key.

2) Grab a VOX modelling amp- use the 2203 model as your basic rhythm tone- juice the volume control max, set the gain control to somewhere around 2-3 o'clock. Set the wattage control completely off (i.e. no attentuation), set the amps master volume to whatever level you need.

3) MXR Distortion+, and a Ibaneze Tube screamer for a solo goose- He pretty much used the Tube scremaer around the NOTB era. Prior he used the MXR, and later (POM, Powerslave) he used the MXR. Went back to the TS9 for SIT.

4) Analog chorus pedal for the cleaner arpeggiated chord work ala Revelations or Powerslave

Well , let me see...
1) I already have the pup on my guitar

2) At the moment i can´t grab another amp , just pedals.

3)I´ve never played with this pedals before , they really do the "magic" ?

4)I really want a anlog one , what pedal do you suggest me?

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

I have been playing along to Iron Maiden songs this week and the Dimarzio Super Distortion, Duncan Distortion, Kent Armstrong M215, JB, EVO and Duncan Custom can all do a credible job in a strat style guitar. However I am not an amp guy.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

#2 is killing you bro- if you don't have a Master volume JMP or 800 type model on your amp, it's fruitless. But A crunchbox may help you- very "800-ish".

#3 For solos, absolutely. Adrian always hits the goose for solos.

You can hear the MXR kick in here big time on the trooper from this concert- not to mention it's very obvious (aside from the visual) when he kicks it on/off during the song- not just for the solo.

#4 I'm partial to an old MIJ Boss Ce-2. Wish I had never sold it- best Ive tried in recent years is the MXR micro chorus.

2) i have a tube preamp , really similar to the marshall ones.

3) he only uses the mrx + as a boost?

4) do you think that the super vibe ( marshall pedal) can do it?

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

i'm just gona say it cuz i'm sick of reading this thread

you're not gona get there by putting pedals in front of your Line 6

Line 6 amps aren't designed to take pedals and I'm not convinced Spiders are designed to sound good.

You need a decent 20w all-tube amp. A Blackstar HT20 or a Jet City or a Night Train.

It's gona do a lot more for your sound than a pile of pedals, a custom guitar, or anything else you'd use to polish that turd of an amp.

I'm not trying to be rude, man, I'm trying to keep you from wasting any money.

I bet you get closer to Adrian's tone with a Blackstar HT20 and no pedals than you do with a Line 6 and every pedal that's been mentioned in this thread so far.

i duno what the exchange rate or your local price for a Blackstar or JetCity would be, but that Jet City 20w combo is only like $300 here. By the time you've bought a fancy tube preamp pedal and an overdrive, you already could have bought that all-tube amp!

So yeah, dude, you're not making any sense to me and you're being stubborn and arguing with a bunch of dudes who know better. You can't put a custom guitar and a bunch of analog pedals in front of a crappy digital modeling amp and hope for good tone...you're just gona run all of that great gear into the crap-filter of that ****ty amp and end up unsatisfied.

so...GO GET A ****ING TUBE AMP DUDE.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Don’t forget Dave’s DiMarzio Super Distortion pickups, a key to achieving that thinner, metallic sound. Adrian also has one in the B&W shot above.
http://www.woodytone.com/2010/12/14/early-maiden-murray-smith-gear/

"Thin and metallic" is not at all what the Super Distortion sounds like. Dave Murray used single coils a lot too so that's probably the sound you're thinking of.

Man I've played those Line 6 amps before and with enough tweaking you can achieve a halfway decent sound. You should try the Marshall models, crank the mids up all the way, and use the EQ feature to shift the mids upward and that should accentuate the mids the way Marshalls sound like. If you don't get it really thick then those Line 6 modelers sound trebley.

Why don't you post some of your sounds and settings and see what people think? That might help you dial in the tone you're looking for. Also find a particular Adrian Smith album so everyone will have the same idea of the tone you're after.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

It's not a matter of amp...
Adrian is using a bit of delay and the dimarzio Super Distortion placed on an alder strat...
Sometimes he uses a wha...
the rest is on the fingers...
Adrian is an amazing player that avoids playing super fast...
Focus on your playing technique and especially bending...

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

this thread is already old and someone resurrected it.
The dude asked how he can get an Adrian Smith tone from his amp.

Answer: he can't

He can't no do it no matter what pedals he buys.

He can't do it no matter what guitar he has.

He can't do it no matter what pickups he uses.

Heres why:

Because his amp cannot deliver the tones hes talking about.

Its not that difficult to understand. The answer is no, you cannot get that sound with that amp.

Solution to problem: save up (as long as you need to ) and get someone in america to send you a marshall. Dont waste another cent on getting pedals that will only make your spider sound worse.

After that...we will have a thread worth reading.

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

This could make a great reality tv show. A bunch of SDUGF members travel to Brazil to give a local guitarist a tonal makeover. One scene would involve throwing the Line 6 amp in question off the same mountain where that statue of Christ is in Rio: "You have been reborn, tone brother!"

Re: how can i get the adrian smith tone?

Hmmm, they used G-K 250ML solid state amps to record Somewhere in Time and GK preamps to record Seventh Son, so you can get good tones out of SS.

Def Leppard used SS Randalls for years, Lynch used RG80 combos live (in a chair behind the massive stacks). There are good sounds to be had from SS amps, it's the Line 6 Spiders that are the problem, I've never gotten a convincing tone out of them, not saying it can't be done, but I haven't been able to do it.
