Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

On a metal amp....HELL YEAH!

On yours, no......stained wood or tolex is the way to go!

How 'bout a green/white/orange mixed tolex covering????!!!! :beerchug:

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

that would be a tough call...i'd have to actually see it i think!?

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

Yeah, the Celtic name gives me the idea of stained hardwood cabs or the same dark green Marshall used to use.

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

I've made several speaker boxes and amp mounts covered in that stuff. From my experience of what I've made and what I've installed, it has no noticable effect on tone. The highs are still crystaline, and the lows still boom. It just fits in better when you make it for a guy with Rhino lining in his pickup.

I think with a name like Celtic Amplifiers, if you cover them in anything other than some shade of darker green, you're cutting yourself short. I definitely want a green amplifier with silver trimmings..that would be so freakin cool

+1,000

I've always had beef with the durability of tolex, and tweed.

Excellent idea. You need something to set you apart from the crowd. Not only does it look distinctive, it's also way more durable than tolex (which I have never liked, btw).

The dark green with a chrome chassis would look schweeeet! Oh ... and use Tele-style chrome knobs too! Awesome!!! :afro:

Again I agree.

I must also add that the Tele-style knobs would make people LISTEN to dial in the amp instead of the 4/5/10 man this amp sucks! I always use this EQ setting and it sounds like CRAP on this amp.

Great idea dashing.

I hadn't thought of it like that, but good point! If people don't like it, they can get out their Sharpie :)

Only bad thing about rhino lining is, its not as duriable as everyone thinks, I ****ed over the rhino lining in our dually.

At least it has a lifetime warrenty!

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

I'm a serious traditionalist here....so take what I say from that perspective.

If I'm buying an amp that's a "clone" of another amp that's in existence then i kind of expect it to look very much like the original, at least close enough so that no one gets sued.

Personally, I like Tolex and Tweed. I like the way they wear and the way they take beatings over time. It gives them character to me. Rubberized coating seems like a fantastic idea but I don't think I would ever go for it simply because the characteristics of Tweed and Tolex are so ingrained in what I know an amp to be like.

I also think the Tele knobs are a terrible idea. On a dimly-lit stage I'd be cursing whoever made the decision to NOT have larger indicators on them. Even my Trace Elliot, which has a single marker on it, I feel is a little too sparsely marked at times.

Aint that the truth. My dads old Chevy had rhino lining, and it got ****ed up by pretty much everything we threw back there. Old tires, chains, axes and shovels, I even had a guitar case rip through it once. On his newer truck it now has one of those rubber mats, I've yet to tear through it.

I think you're missing the point made by Luke ... why do you need to see the numbers? Just turn it until it sounds right.

I wouldn't use rhino either. LineX is a lot better. My father-in-law and brother-in-law both have LineX on their trucks and have dropped and scraped so much on it and it's held up really well, no nicks or anything.

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

Ladies & Gents,
I tend to agree, this could be amazing, but it's something you would want to beta test before making it optino, especially if it's the only option.
I also would like to weigh in on the green tolex & Silver chasis/logo/parts idea. Not only would this look amazing, I think it would positively reflect the name of the company, Celtic Amplifiers. It's a great idea...
Scott, you've got a captive focus group! Ha ha ha, just kidding, but I think it's pretty cool for an amp builder to go to the 'fans' for feedback. I definitely respect that...
Best,
MG

Re: How cool would this be? Amp Covering Material Question

I think the green would look better with gold or another golden color, possibly as an option. Silver comes standard, optional gold. The green and gold would look great together.
