How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Maybe a Custom could get you there? They (it and Super Distortion) both seem to be in the same range.. vintage voiced, thick low end.. nice mids...

Then we also wouldn't have to burn you at the stake for heresy. :amish:

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Here's the "fag" Ace to chime in (I feel the love Odie...)

For the true Ace fan....

#1 Guitar - A Les Paul of course. Most of Aces were actually the "pancake" body maple neck 70's guitars. A touch brighter with the mid bite a little more on the high end than the typical Paul. Minor detail, most LP's will do.

#2 Pups - Super D in the bridge. They are all the same - old new dp100 etc...LOUD! Don't worry about the neck.

#3 Amp - Marshall all the way. 2203x more recently? Laney in the solo years, and your basic Marshall for vintage. Settings - 5's across the board!
G B/M/T V. I generally use a marshall model for Alive and a 5150 without too much gain (6 maybe) for Alive II

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

You'll probably want an MXR Phase 90 as well since that was a huge part of his sound. I am pretty sure Ace used small tweeds in the studio quite a bit.

I guess this makes me Ace #2. Aceman, did you read the January '79 issue of
Guitar player where Ace mentioned his settings? I read that same issue. I didn't buy it because it was $20 and I didn't have the cash.:smack:

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Besides, several of my main guitars are Seymour Duncan equipped. I guess that makes me an official member of the Seymour Duncan users club. :bigok:

Not trying to be a jerk, just that the "what does this guy use" questions get annoying to me.

Then maybe you should keep those comments to yourself and skip these threads. It's easier on you and the interested party who is posting. You may not be trying to be a jerk, but I think it comes across that way to some people.

With a marshall the super distortion is instant ace. My fav pickup up for at least 5-6 years. I want another one now!

To the original poster most of of here have no problem with the "what does he use threads" We can all learn and talk. Without these threads I never would have taken out my first super dist.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Yes, keep the questions comming. Don't let one or two rude people run you off, this is a great, great place.

People that don't like the questions should stay out of the threads, or not be here at all, because they obviously know everything already.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

JEff, ERik, and Aceman. Are there any effects for things like the solo on Love em and leave em? Any boost pedals. I ask because the guy may be able to get closer with some of these things if he does not have a marshall

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Should also mention..SuperD is an awesome... now even "classic" sound...but it's very much a one trick pony..its a hard edged "raw" distortion tone, and is really sensitive to gain levels. You have to remember it was meant to drive a NMV type Marshall into a healthy amount of gain. If you are using a modern amp, remember to go really conservative on the gain and treble controls, otherwise the Super will get REAL harsh.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Yep , Marshall,Les Paul,Super Distortion is the ticket but remember to tune your guitar a 1/2 step down.

Lucky me then, 'cause I got a vintage Phase 90 for 10 bucks a long, long time ago. It's also good for those old EVH songs. I've been using an MXR EVH Phase 90 a lot lately and giving the vintage one a rest. I didn't know this thread would get so much attention (mostly positive...YEAH!!!). I guess there are a lot of Ace fans in the SD forum. I've just been listening to some old Kiss and I love Ace's sound, both live and in the studio. Thanks again for all the great answers.
