How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

I didn't realize that Ace used a MXR Phase 90. Does anyone know how he used this, was it on all the time, or just occasionally? I had actually been watching the Kissology video pretty closely to see if he was using a pedal board of any kind, and I could never see anything on stage.

I think I had even asked at one point if anyone knew if he was using a boost for solo's, or if the guy at the sound board just handled boosting his signal at the right time. If he was using a boost pedal, I could NEVER see him using it, and it would have to be damn transparent, because I can never hear a tonal change for leads...just volume increase.

I'd be interested to know. I've gotten away from it over the years, but it really is a tone I'm interested in getting as close to as possible....it's THE sound of rock that I fell in love with as a kid.

On the kissology he uses his volume knobs a lot. I think he used it to "boost" for solos. He always turns his volume down on the rhythm parts. At least it looks like it to me.
I wonder about the studio.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

There is an interview with Ace in the February 1997 issue of Guitarist where he says:

"Once in a while, Hendrix would use an Arbiter Fuzz Face, and I would use a digital delay and power booster. Mind you, they wouldn't be on the floor, they'd be run by my tech; y'know, with these boots on I'd end up tripping over them."

Obviously he's referring to his rig on the reunion tour, rather than the 70s, but I imagine the principle of having the tech work the effects is long-established - what with the boots, stage set and theatrics, to say nothing of Ace's chemical enhancement.

#3 Amp - Marshall all the way. 2203x more recently? Laney in the solo years, and your basic Marshall for vintage. Settings - 5's across the board!
G B/M/T V.

Did Ace use master volume Marshall's back in the day? What about Paul?

Master volume Marshall's came out in 75 I think, so they would have been using non-MVs on the early recordings. Ace always played 'em on 10 anyway. :)

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

IN 76 he definitly switched to MV. The sound difference is there. Watching the kissology DVD is the easiest tip off. The sound from 75 to the 76 tour changes and looking at the marshall they look different

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

I have two days to go until I get my Kissology

Me too or I am moving out!:laugh2:

Pretty sure Ace used both a 50wt and a 100wt non MV Marshall in the early days, the 100 for sure. I think the Firebird Paul used to play (Alive) was originally Ace's but I could be dreaming that? Ace also had an Echoplex and a Mu-tron Octave Divider all were run at the board as far as I know.

In the studio he used lots of stuff besides Marshall, I have a pic of him in his studio somewhere around here and he has some old Vox's, Ampegs and Fenders. He had an old Fender Harvard that he recorded with a lot.

Ace also stated using wireless stuff after he got electrocuted in FLA. I think he started using those live in '78 but maybe it was earlier, that certainly would have effected his live sound.

On the topic of Ace.. you should all be proud of me. I learned Strutter - it's my first Kiss song. Really cool song / riffs.

...my mom commented that she'll disown me if she ever sees me in a Kiss costume/makeup...

Yeah, but how will she know it's you? :bigok:

My son and I jam KISS tunes together. You should try Cold Gin, Firehouse and Black Diamond too!

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Awsome thread, if anyone is interested they should pick up the book, Kiss behind the mask. Gives a fair bit of insight behind a lot of the recorded material and who played on what track, and a little bit of the gear as well.

Sufficed to say I always heard Gene comment on Ace didn't play on this or Peter didn't play on that, the real dirt comes out when you read how many tunes Gene never played on.

TimmyPage ya have to learn some more, they are great tunes to just jam too.

I can cop a pretty good Kiss tone with my Epi Elite LP(Dimarzio SD bridge) and Vox valvetronix.I can't put that axe down w/out playing Detroit rock city/King of the night time world, good stuff I don't care how simple people say it is.
