How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

+1
I guess this makes me Ace #2. Aceman, did you read the January '79 issue of
Guitar player where Ace mentioned his settings? I read that same issue. I didn't buy it because it was $20 and I didn't have the cash.:smack:

Read it? I memorized it!!! I got one off of ebay for $9! MAybe I'll fax you a few pages when I get my printer hooked up. And remember - there are about 8 Aces out here! Not including the occassional wuss like SImon or Jeff who won't put an Ace avatar up - Not that there avatars aren't tasty, still...

And Ace does use a delay and an occasional dash of flange or phase - but mostly for an occasional solo or his solo spot. Also, mostly for things after ALIVE. The pedals were ran by a sound guy. I'm mean, come on now, the guy could barely walk, let alone run a pedal board!

And really - let's don't over-analyze the sound. It was an LP, into a Marshall, with a SuperD in the bridge. That's about 98% right there. As with many things - a little less gain than you would think.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

I can cop a pretty good Kiss tone with my Epi Elite LP(Dimarzio SD bridge) and Vox valvetronix.I can't put that axe down w/out playing Detroit rock city/King of the night time world, good stuff I don't care how simple people say it is.

I guess it might be kinda simple, but IMHO it's pure rock and roll at it's finest. :naughty:

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Christ you guys bought the Ace issue on ebay, I have had the damn thing since it came out you Johnny Come Latelys!:laugh2:

Dead right about not over thinking it, especially the early days.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Awsome thread, if anyone is interested they should pick up the book, Kiss behind the mask. Gives a fair bit of insight behind a lot of the recorded material and who played on what track, and a little bit of the gear as well.

Sufficed to say I always heard Gene comment on Ace didn't play on this or Peter didn't play on that, the real dirt comes out when you read how many tunes Gene never played on.

TimmyPage ya have to learn some more, they are great tunes to just jam too.

Great book , I read it a while back and couldn`t put it down. Since were on the Kiss subject has anyone got the Detriot `77 DVD boot that surfaced earlier this year? Great show and great quality. I also just got Houston `76 DVD boot Destroyer tour that`s really good but not the full show.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

I have the Epi Ace frehley.. Need a Marshall and platform boots now..

Only Kiss book I read was Gene's. Kinda a tribute to his masculinity. He makes no mention of having any bass parts played by anyone but himself. Hmmm.. :27:

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

All this KISS book talk and no one mentions Into the Void...

And I can't believe an Ace Frehley tone post generated 60+ posts!

Shock Me!

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Oh, I have that book! And I must say it definitely tainted my image of Ace.
Especially the whole vibrator up the pooper thing. Not that I was surprised but g**Dammit!:eek13:

"Into the void" gave us some info on Ace that I think I was better of without.

Aceman, when you mentioned "Into the void", did you mean the book Ace's old girlfriend put out or the song?

I personally wouldn't say "Into the void" was the best song on the album. "Within", and even "Psycho Circus" I think, were better songs!

I thought he was talking about the song. But I have not read the book. Kiss and Tell written by a few of his "friends" gives a bad image of him.

I felt the song was the most kiss-like on the Cd. Psycho circus was a great song as well.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Man I get the feeling I don't need to know.

Ace has gone through some dark and ugly days I only hope he has gotten it back together.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Listen, I'm thinking of leaving the house for the first day in weeks, and I was going to go get a Kiss book or two. Behind the Mask has been recommended. What is this nonsense about the vibrator in the poop schute....I think I need to stay away from that.

What books do you guys recommend, where Gene isn't doing ALL the pontificating and storytelling?

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Kiss and Sell was written by their one of their accountants from 76-87. It is a good read, many details about financial issues in the band and some recording stuff as well. It is not written from a "haters' point of view.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

The only book I've read so far is KISS and Makeup and IMO, it is a great read. Pretty funny in some parts. Definitely a must for any KISS fan.

On the subject of Psycho Circus, "We Are One" is a kick ass tune. Just listen to the words.

No mention of "2000 Man" either? For shame....LOL

Oh man I'm not there yet in the book, and now not sure if I want to read that. So far good read, I read the end of the book first cause it has a review of each album by the band and little blurbs on various tunes. After I did that I went to the beginning and started fresh, needless to say I may skip a chapter now haha.

Re: How do I get Ace Frehley tone?

Another question about Ace's pickups. I was watching Kissology and on the Mike Douglas Show Ace was using a Les Paul with chrome covered humbuckers. Does anyone know what pickups those were? I really liked the sound of them. They didn't sound like super distortioms to me.

Get Kiss Alive Forever-The Complete Touring History. It`s goes over every tour the band has had , lists all the dates and a lot of the setlists with plenty of rare photos. If you haven`t got that book it is a must have.

I can almost guarantee those are the stock PAFs. I don't think he started using the Super Distortion until the tour that became "Alive".
