How do they make the SGJs so much cheaper?

Re: How do they make the SGJs so much cheaper?

I think that's what drew me to get one - the idea that "here's an SG I can jack around with and not be too uptight about keeping its value".

Yeah, the sort of thing you could consider redoing the finish, or even trying your hand at other embelishments. So long as it's a worthwhile guitar, of course.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I tried an LPJ out recently at a local GC, seemed like a nice guitar to me. Yes it doesn't have attention to detail the regular LPs do but it still had nice fret work played well, imo. I'd own one myself, problem. The people calling them garbage seem prone to extremes.

Extremes are good. They help us form strong opinions without a lot of research and experience.

Sweeping generalisations? They are all the same.

I played a Gibson Sonex in the 80's and it rocked. Great tone, action was killer all for around $350. I have the utmost faith in Gibson's entry level line. I would love own another one but people are asking big money for them now.

Some would say that the entry-level Gibson lines are actually the only ones worth owning (taking costs into consideration).

And people calling their fretwork "nice" seem to have never played a guitar with fretwork that is actually nice.

I hate to say this, but this has been my experience too. I have had 4 new gibsons in the last few years, the best quality/price ratio definitely from Gibson USA not Gibson Custom. Small sample, I admit but still...

Re: How do they make the SGJs so much cheaper?

I know Gibsons pretty well, having owned dozens of them, and have to say that the LPJ and SGJ may be the best bang for buck guitar Gibson has ever made. They only cut the corners that don't effect anything. They're light, resonant, have resonant hardware, and the wood breathes without a thick finish on it.

Totally worth the money. With the right pickups, those models may turn out to be some of the best sounding Gibsons. When Fender does this, they turn out more expensive. When Gibson does it, people are afraid, even with the nice low price tag. I don't know much about the EMG-like pickups, but I'd just yank them and install good Duncans, and consider myself done.
