How do you mark your pickups?

Lately I seem to have a lot of pickups laying around and quite a good portion of them (Fender ones especially) have no markings on them and sometimes I have problems remembering which pickups they were.

I pack them in cases but sometimes on my workbench they tend to get messed up.

I have tried stickers on the bottom side and they fall off. I also tried markers, but it won't seem to stick.

So my question is, how do you mark your pickups?

I don't. Duncan's say Duncan, DMZ's say DMZ. If it isn't one of those, don't care.

If it's a good pickup, it's in a guitar.

Re: How do you mark your pickups?

I keep (or buy) empty pickup boxes for storage. I mark each box, and keep pickups separated by brand in larger boxes, and so on. Unknown stuff is separated by other criteria. I like organization, for quick identification.

Yeah, I don't keep spare pickups around the house. If they're good they go in a guitar and if not, they're sold.

Sticker on the baseplate with name, DCR and date. Also keep boxes if I have them.

Re: How do you mark your pickups?

The only pickups I have 'spare' are for future scratch builds......where the entire parts for the build are in a cardboard box waiting for the guitar to be past the buffing stage and into assembly.

Re: How do you mark your pickups?

Most of my loose pickups have some sort of factory identification on them. Some of the custom humbuckers get stickers.
Cheapies get often marked with their DCR and sometimes brand/model using a superfine Sharpie, the one that's like a click pen.

I don't have a lot of loose pickups with fiberboard, but the Sharpie writes on almost anything.
If I had to label one and didn't want to mark the pickup itself, I'd probably try writing on a bit of masking tape.
If masking tape wouldn't stay stuck after a while, then I'd use a small patch of duct tape.

Re: How do you mark your pickups?

i have piles of really good pups not in guitars. most are labeled from the builder, the ones that arent i try an use a bit a tape with the model on the baseplate. i do have a handful of random pups that i have no idea what they are, mostly alnico magnet single coils and probably fender but no idea what model. i try and get each guitar dialed in but as my taste and rig changes, or new things come out or cross my path, something that was "perfect" may not be any longer so its nice to have a lot of options around. there are probably 20+ pups that i should just sell though

Small ziplock baggies are your friend! Put the pickip into the snack-size bag along with a note saying what it is. That's how I know which of my identical looking Tele neck pickups is hotter and A5.
