How do you set up your action?

Re: How do you set up your action?

as low as possible without messing with a nice full tone and adding buzz.
I play some real fast stuff like malmsteen, wylde, romeo and it helps to have the action comfortable. i just cant see playing that stuff wit a action set like SRV's :saeek: which was very high off the neck and he used thick A$$ strings

Re: How do you set up your action?

I used to go the Joe Satriani route and go as low as humanly possible without buzzing... with proper truss rods adjustments this used to be as little as a 24th of an inch throughout but in the last year I've raised it to 1/12th or so. This way I find the tone sings a little bit more and gives notes a little more "speaking" power and individual attack and clarity, especially for strats. I can still play just as fast on it though it takes just a teensy bit more work. But that's ok since it offers me more opportunity for musical grimacing. :D The guitar aquires a bit more of a snarl when i dig into it as well.

Whenever I take my '92 MIA Strat into stores to play with, people are often surprised that my action is where it is, as they'll see a Strat with two buckers and a floyd and assume "shredder guitar, low low action" and then they'll be a little surprised that it's above a 16th of an inch! I've even had people offer to lower it for me but when i explain why i like it the way it is then they usually want to try it with their own guitars.

I take it down until it barely buzzes, then I raise it back up until it quits.
