How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

So I tried one of the Budwahs from my inventory last month. Needless to say I ended up keeping it for myself! I had a Fulltone Clyde but sold it several months ago. I don't use a wah much. Too many players hide behind their wah pedals or overuse that effect.

I think this Budwah sounds better than Dunlop or Morely I ever owned. I really don't think a wah pedal can get better than this. Not saying Budda makes the best wah pedal. Its just that spending 400.00 on a wah probably can't get me any farther than I am already with this wah. I mean how good can a wah pedal get and what makes it so good?

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

Why not play something like a Teese RMC, Pro Analog Supa Quack etc and then judge ?

If the only guitar I played was an Epiphone or Fender Squire and I thought that a guitar couldn't get any better than that, would I be correct ?

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

I'm not sure it's fair to compare a Budwah with a Squier. The Budwahs are very, very nice wahs.

I think you missed part of my post. I did mention my old Fulltone Clyde, and Dunlops and Morleys I have owned. It's not like I haven't tried different pedals before. Just thinking that there's no need to continue looking for a better wah pedal because it's as good as I've found.

Its true to a point, though still shortsighted. In the end if your happy with it its really all the matters though.

Take OD pedals, have I owned or even played everything out there ? Not hardly. What do I use right now ? A voodoo lab sparkle drive. Hardly fancy or exotic nor even that expensive.

Am I happy with it and not looking for other OD's ? YES

Would it be foolish however for me to think its the be all/end all of OD's when theres tons of them I haven't tried at all price points ? YES as well

See what I'm saying

I see what you're saying but I think it's harder to hear the difference between different wahs than it is for between a great overdrive and a better one. I mean really.

It's like delays. Analog delays usually sound good to me. I can tell that a Maxon AD 999 sounds very nice but how much nicer is another delay going to sound than that? It's going to be hard to tell when you hear it. That's what I'm saying.

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

You need to be open minded about gear in general. I have always taken the approach to try anything and then judge what works for me. I have done this with guitars, amps, effects, Women etcc., etc. When it comes to Wahs, I have a few and I use 2 in particular. On my home board I have an old Thomas Organ Company Way pedal from the 60's. This pedal was given to me a long time ago and quite honestly I never really used it because it sounded terrible. There lies a hidden truth....... just because its old don't mean its great. I had this wah heavily modded by John Spina (StratDeluxer97). now it is my main Wah on my home board. The only annoying thing is due to it being so old the gears are worn and if I take my foot off of it, the pedal drops. This means I have to stand on it to hold the position I might want to keep. Other than that it is a wonderful Wah. My other Wah is a modded Vox 847. This also was modded by John, and it is more versatile than my old one but it sounds very close. I use this on my gigging board. I like this wah for different reasons. This has an external pot so I can vary the sweep and it also has a lot of other adjustments that can be done internally, but honestly what I try to do is to get it to sound like my old one.

There are a lot of great Wahs out there right out of the box. The Teese, Fulltone, and a new Israeli based Company called Arte effect that is making a killer sounding wah also. BBE has a Wah out now as well. The point is years back you had to find someone that could voice the Wah the way you wanted it to sound, today you can buy a wah that is tunable in a variety of ways. Everybody should have a good wah, but the term good could mean completely different things to diffent players.

Its like anything, if its something your really into, you notice more differences.

Take red wine for example. Darn if I could tell the difference between a $10 bottle, a $50 bottle and a $500 bottle, but I'm not a wine drinker. Someone who really loves wine could easily tell you 20 ways they are different.

I use my wah pedal a ton, as I love to play both Hendrix'y style riffs as well as funk, both very wah heavy.

As such, I'm sure what I listen for in a wah is different than someone elses needs,

make sense ?

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

One reason I really like the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is because I really dig the non Jimi modes on it's 3 way rotary. 'Whacked' is shifted lower, making it fun to wah out on lower strings, ala Cantrell. The 'Shaft' mode is more chirpy on the top, good for funkier rhythms.

Also, the rotary volume and bright LED are nice.

I had a Budda I used forever, and I loved that as well, but the options on the Clyde Deluxe won me over.

Interestingly, I used to play with a Hammond B3 wizard, who had his 58 Hammond modded with an FX loop. I turned him onto my Budda, and it became a huge part of his signature sound.....and he's the local B3 hotshot now. Google Big Organ Trio
Anyway, because he made the B3/Budwah a tone nobody's ever heard before, Budda now endorses him.

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

This is gonna sound really odd, but I bought a Behringer Wah pedal, for 70 bucks (compared to a Dunlop pedal which is about 4 times the price of that here), and at first the Behringer sucked. Then I found out how to modify it, and then suddenly it became a ridiculously good value pedal (although the mods void the warranty), with good sweep range, and no more noise than any other wah.

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

How's the Budda for some quasi-funky stuff? Does it get ice-picky?

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

I've looked at this thread a few times and simply don't understand what you are really asking...

If you are asking about which wah is the "best" you'll get a million answers because different guys like different wahs...I am a fan of RMC wahs...Geoffrey offers several different flavors of wah pedals and IMO they are all good at something. I also like vintage Vox wahs (if you can afford them) as well as older Colorsound wahs (shoulda never sold mine!)

As new wah's besides the RMC stuff goes the Fulltone is alright (I think the RMC 4 Picture wah is "better" at nailing the old Vox thing than the Clyde but the Clyde is a good wah), the Budda is an alright low buck wah...true bypass, decent sweep, it's made by Dunlop and IMO is better than ANY Dunlop branded wah! I haven;t heard a Dunlop that I really like to be honest and the reissues Vox wahs are OK as well...not amazing but OK...also Area 51 wahs and wah drop in kits are quite cool...not really the middle/late 60's Italian Vox wah tone but the late 60/early 70's Vox tone...

The Budda got a pretty clean sweep which is great for funk however it does have a bit of a sharp top end...the best Funk wah out there IMO is the RMC Wizard wah which as strange as this sounds is also my personal fav for a modern "heavy" wah...

I'm just the opposite. After using the Clyde for a couple of years I finally sold it. A few months later I got 6 Budwahs in inventory and tested them. That when I decided to keep one. It's been very good since. Simple to use and works very well. I kind of regret paying so much for the Clyde!

I don't get anything like that from the Budwahs I tried. It works great and doesn't add anything undesireable to the sound. No spikes or anything that doesn't sound great. So far I tested six of the ones I ordered. All work well!

ALL wah pedals have spikes in the tone...that the whole point!

Im not saying that a sharp top is a bad thing, I love it myself...

Re: How Good Can A Wah Get Really?

Prolly one of the best I have ever played through was an old Morley. I remember owning one in the 60's because of Hendrix. I also remember it getting stolen from our rehearsal place.... :(
