How Many Amps Do You Need???????

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

Think of 5 amps as $5000 in equity. Instead of having numbers on a slip of paper that comes out of an ATM, you've got a stable of amps. The problem is that you'll never want to sell them. But, then again, you wouldn't feel the need to sell a check for $5000 either. Someday, when you feel you don't need 5 big amps, but would rather have a new luxury car without paying for it, you simply dump a few......the ones that didn't get played often.

it depends i think on what your ideal tone is. For some its a LP int a marshall tube amp, other its differnt its all personal

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

I think there's room for a few basic flavours, in the same way that many of us have a strat, a tele, and a gibson-style guitar.

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

As aleclee pointed out, the trick is to find the right amp. I'm perfectly happy with one amp that can do a multitude of things very well.

The closest thing to my holy grail so far is my 2x10'' Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 amp. I like that it's 30w instead of my Triamp's 100w (VERY loud amp). I get good tone at a more manageable volume. It's cleans are shimmery (my friend had an older Vox AC30 and liked my cleans a lot more) and they remind me of Matchless' stuff (which is the benchmark IMHO). The distortion is killer. I wanted something along the lines of a Super Lead or a CAE OD-100. Something moderate gain, articulate, and singing. The Hot Cat has it.

I could go on wanting each individual little tone down the line, but nothing is going to offer all of it in a good package. Right now I have an amp that does amazing cleans, distortion and handles pedals well (I'm using an MJM Blues Devil overdrive pedal for my blues playing... that thing will rock with anything).

Pedals really help nowadays. I'm looking at a Love Pedal Church of Tone 50 for my plexi-ish needs. A few years ago, pedals replacing amps was a concept unheard of... I love technology :D

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

i could only imagine "needing" one maybe two more...or three at the most...of course four would be nice and then there's bass amps... :smack: :smack: :smack:

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

As all have said before.
It depends on what tonal pallet you need.
Most people NEED one amp, some people NEED more.
Most people WANT more, Some people want one amp.

I reckon I'd be happy with a:

Bogner XTC
Triaxis + 50/50
Mesa Blue Angel.

But all I really need is the triaxis + 50/50 I'm GASing for (the XTC would do... :D) )

When I get that question asked, I just calmly reply, why do you need so many (purses, shoes, etc...)? ...End of discussion.

hee-hee . . . classic! :laugh2:

An amp for each guitar, sounds reasonable to me.

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

Amps, or any gear for that matter, as an "investment" is usually a terrible idea in comparison to actually going through the proper channels. There's so much guesswork and speculation for long-term ROI that it's a crapshoot most times.

All in all I could get away with only having one amp. And oddly enough I could see myself being alot happier with things now if I did exactly that. If I didn't have the possibility of tinkering around I'd probably spend my time in other things being more productive.

But I do like having a few around for different sized venues. There's nothing worse than being thrown into a situation that calls for something and not having the right tool for the job, and I really view amps as tools in that capacity....

****The wife wants to know: "How many amps & guitars do you need???" ****

Ha, I've been popped the question as well! I answered that I am a man and gearythis it is something like having sex: neva' enuff :D

I just need two different rugged 50W EL34 hi-gain amps runned simultaneously, a couple of pedals, a hi-gain combo for backup and an amp guru to keep all the amps tuned. Considering axes a main and two backups are good enough for me. If you (as I) have more than you basically need, you're a collector and have G.A.S. :D

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

What amps does a guitar player need? I'd say 2 or 3

One really great tube amp that suits your musical style to a T, which is used for rehearsals and gigs.

One modeling amp or low volume tube amp that can sound great at practice volumes.

Any more than that is just a luxury for having more tonal options that different tubes, features or cabinetry will deliver.

I think I'd be happiest with a room that resembles Billy Gibbons or Joe Perry's amp room.

Re: How Many Amps Do You Need???????

2-3 at least. One good clean amp, one good drive amp. U know what I mean... well.. Fender and Marshall :D

My Laney covers all the rock n roll territory, while my newly built BFDR w/6L6 does the clean job. However, Id add a non-MV Marshall anytime!
