My first serious bass was a Fender American Standard Jazz. I’ve since sold it, but it was a decent bass. I bought it because I didn’t know jack about how a bass should sound an MIA Std seemed like a solid starting point. In hindsight it was very clear/articulate, but lacked a little in the character department and had kind of a wimpy bridge tone.
Fender Jazz, Flea - I’m not a Flea fan and originally pulled this bass off the shelf as a joke. This bass is no joke. It’s thick and wooly with a lot of character. It became my primary bass and I use this bass for anything in Eb or below. Strangely, it doesn’t sound good tuned up to E. It kicked my American Standard to backup duty.
Suhr Classic J - I picked this one because in addition to sounding great it had a solid bridge pickup tone. It’s not as wild as the Flea bass and I choose it when I want a more clear/refined sound. This is my E standard, drop D bass. I sold my American Standard after getting this one.
I eventually got a gig that called for a P Bass kind of sound. I picked up an American Professional, again because I didn’t know what a good P should sound like and it seemed like a solid starting point, and again in hindsight this one was very clear/articulate but lacking in overall character.
Fender AO Precision - I played every bass in town and this one was it. I was looking for a Road Worn Precision hoping it would be a repeat of my experience with the Flea, but the only one I could find sounded like wet cardboard. This AO on the other hand just sounded killer. I actually left twice and went back because I was worried I was imagining it was good because of the price, but two years later and I don’t know how many hours on it and I feel I can say that it was worth every penny.
I’ve since sold the Am Pro P Bass, but I’m on the hunt for second P since I still need a backup.
