how much "better" is stud coil on duncan HBs

I have heard that the stud coils is the better choice for
splitting on SD HBs. But to get humcancelling, I need stud
on neck with screws on bridge (or visca versa).

How much better is stud sound, because I'll give up
humcancelling for tone.

I doubt there is really any difference worth worrying about if any at all.

With the bridge pickup, the screw coil will be a little brighter and tighter because of the proximity to the bridge. With the neck pickup there is little difference that I can hear.

There's just a little more oomph on the stud side, because there is more iron mass there to "conduct" the magnetic field. It's subtle. If you're concerned, you could always flip the magnet in one of your pickups and wire accordingly.

I also always wondered which coil cancels hum?

Neither or both.
Hum canceling is the product of summing opposites to equal zero.

only makes a difference with buckers wound with 2 different coils, which is a dmarzio patent...I have a pdf with a bunch of wiring options, how to select each coil, for both diamrzio & duncan, and even mixing them (as I did)

note I think I have the tone pot wiring backwards (hot should come in on other leg), I'll fix that today if I get a break.

Screw coil = thinner, brighter (assuming it's facing bridge).

Slug coil = thicker, darker.

The slug coil will also be a little bit louder because the slugs don't protrude through the bottom of the baseplate, meaning the magnetic field is less spread out and more concentrated than with the screw coil.

This is fantastic help guys. I will set the bridge up normally and cut it
for the stud coil. The neck will cut to the screw coil, and Ithe next
decision will be whether to put the neck in with screws to the bridge
rather than neck...

By the way DaveZ, I've been a heavy customer of your wiring diagrams
and soundclips, thanks for posting all that stuff.
