i think it comes out around $2800, a lot of money and none of it is even expensive, just a lot of it.. but due to more money coming in from the job its time to loose the quanity and gain some quality,
Im planning on getting a JCM 900 off ebay and for guitar, save about 1000-1200 and spend the whole day in a music store (a place called bills music in katonsville MD, GREAT BIG place of wall to wall guitars) and deciding what the best guitar for me is, NO GUITAR WILL BE UN-PLAYED
its all planned for August, im stoked

i live less than 20 minutes drive from Bill's .. it's a pretty good place, but nothing spectacular .. they don't budge much on price either, but they'll ususally throw in some freebies on accessories when you buy a guitar ... there is a Guitar Center in Towson which is ... well ... guitar center ... i've heard real good things about Atomic music in College Park .. and Chuck Levin's in Wheaton is real good too ... good luck
as for the topic ... i cant remember that far back to get it all .. and i'd be hopeless to try to count strings, cables, picks, etc .... but in the last 2 years: the brian moore was about 700 w/ case, my little fender was 250, my synth was 600 and the carvin was 450 ... the upgrade (pups, pots, caps, etc) for the guitar in my avatar were about 225 ... the wah was 125 ... so thats 2350 ... going back all the way would mean i'd have to remember what all my rack gear cost and my other guitars, bass, four-track, drum machine, keyboard, mixer ... i bet i am into this whole thing for just under 8 grand
and that doesnt count lessons for a couple years, and a week at natl. gtr summer workshop
there are a bunch of things i'd like to have ... but on the whole, i have no room to complain

I once bought an custom made archtop for $14,600.00. Sold it to a Doctor/gtr collector for profit.
I would rather not think of all the doe I spent on musical weapons. Might put me in a bad mood.

for me, i think the internet and message baords has reduced the potenital overall amount ...
internet - save money 'cuz ya' get better prices on items rather than being stuck buying from catalogues / local retail
message boards - save money 'cuz ya' get better info to make informed choices and keep from wasting money on things you'd end up unhappy with which would lead to additional purchases trying to get it right
then again, if i had more $$$ to feed the GAS, the net and forums would lead to massive expenditures

The money I've saved buying used gear on Ebay, combined with the ability to ask people if somethings good or not before I buy it has saved me tremendous amounts of money searching for tone shotgun style.

I started adding up what I've got in my possession now, and can hardly come up with a number....close to $60,000. Since day 1, which would be when I was 10 in 1981,
it's hard to figure. I've made a hobby/business out of buying and selling gear, and have moved around 160 amps and maybe 120 guitars. It's almost hard to believe that that much gear has passed through my hands, but I'm assuming it's around 1//4 of a million dollars. If I figured in rehearsal space money, strings, lesson books and videos, and numerous other typical musician expenses, it would be a ridiculous amount. Of course, the money didn't all come straight from my pocket, and was mostly just circulated, but it would be interesting to know the exact amount to the dollar.
