How much is your limit?

Re: How much is your limit?

I enjoy buying and trying out new gear, fairly often I suppose. I rarely buy new as its not a great way to spend money on something if I'm not sure I'll still love in a few months/years.. That said, back in '08 I knew I wanted a Gibson Les Paul studio as I'd sold one a few years prior to fund a US Std Strat - so once I'd saved up the cash I bought the LP I wanted, and took my sweet time finding the right one for me. I still have it now but if I were to sell it I'd certainly lose money on it - probably 50% of what I paid.
I also bought a nice acoustic way back in 1996 brand new (literally from the factory!). I haven't found another acoustic that I've liked enough to warrant moving it on so its still in the arsenal.

For all my other guitars and amps, I typically buy used at what I think is a fair price (I'll research this online), and I always buy what I can test out first. Then if I don't gel with it after a while and start jonesing for something else I'll on-sell for what is a fair price and the rules of karma usually mean I get my next piece of kit for a fair price also!

In terms of bucks - I recently sold an amp for about 900 bucks that I'd paid about 1000 for about a year prior. I really added no wear and tear to it so the 10% decline in value is what I write off as my cost to have fun with it for a year.. The new owner is happy, I can now go buy something else :)

Overall, I see a lot of value in buying and trading gear as it allows me to explore new sounds, techniques, and varieties of styles and feels. I'm happy if this process costs a little. Most people I've met with a similar mindset have been a pleasure to deal with.

I don’t look at guitar money that way. I don’t expect linear relationships. I think in terms of the size of the smile on my face when I swipe my card.

That smile is a frown upside down when you find out that card charges a 38% interest fee.;)
