How to get more clean head room

Ok so I have a peavey valve king 112 amp 50 watts and it just breaks up way to early around 1 o'clock and I was wondering if theres any ways to squeez more clean head room out of it?

Re: How to get more clean head room

This is prolly a really dumb question but for the tubes is it the power tubes or pre-amp tubes or both?

Re: How to get more clean head room

different power tubes could give you more clean headroom and slightly lower gain preamp tubes coudl also give you more headroom...what kind of tubes are in it now?

Re: How to get more clean head room

Stock crap. 2 6l6's and 3 12ax7's. I know the 12AX7's a electro harmonix except for on is a groove tube. They're all crap tubes. I have a speaker ordered it'll be coming in th enext couple of days.

Re: How to get more clean head room

I actually like the EH 12AX7's. Try a nice set of 6L6's that were made for clean tones and that speaker and see what happens...BTW, what speaker did you get?

Re: How to get more clean head room

I got an Emenince Govoner. I got it from musicans friend so I can return it if it dosnt have what I want.

a 12au7 in the PI will clean that thing up for sure
Hmm ya I'm sorry I know nothing about this wht is a "PI"?

Re: How to get more clean head room

You have the same prob i do w/ my Laney protube 30. What i do is use a Boss ME- 50 This way i can turn the drive down on the amp *at the cleanest setting, and turn the master Level up on the boss.which will only amplify the clean singal thats the Amp is sending.Im not sure but there might be some power loss if the amps setting are turned down to its cleanest level

Re: How to get more clean head room

phase inverter, preamp tube closest to the power tubes

doesn't that thing have a low gain input jack too? you could plug into that, yanno

Re: How to get more clean head room

an efficient ceramic speaker will make more difference in clean headroom than tubes. once you determine the efficiency of the speaker, moving to one that is only a few db more efficient can make a huge difference in headroom.

once you've done that, get some 7581 power tubes. They're pricey, but it takes more to break them up.

Re: How to get more clean head room

governor's are really efficient

try the 12au7 first, it's your cheapest option. If it doesn't work out, eh, you only lost like $10

Re: How to get more clean head room

Scott: Do you even know where someone could get some 7581's? I woudl love to get a matched quad but I can't even find a pair:smack: .

I started to suggest 7581's but last time I saw a matched pair it was about 2 weeks ago and they were $180 for the pair...

Re: How to get more clean head room

One other thing to consider is how you're setting the EQ. Try less low end as you turn up (and less EQ overall--don't crank everything) and that might buy you a little more headroom.

KCA NOS Tubes had several. I scored a pair for Evan's amp. They ran about $100 for the pair at the time. Considering he'll probably get twice the life as compared to the current production 6L6's, it's a good deal.

Called mike a few weeks ago...at that time he had a pair. I passed on the pair since I needed 4 but called back the next day and the pair had sold:smack: !

Re: How to get more clean head room

I have been buying Philips NOS and ANOS 7581A for the last couple of years and they usually run from 80-100$ a pair. I should be set for power tubes for the next couple of decades...
