How to liven up a black guitar?

Re: How to liven up a black guitar?

I like black guitars when done right.

I would start by making the whole body a satin/matte finish by using 000 steel wool then move up to 0000.

Then you can go either all black or all gold with the hardware. Whatever is your fancy.

But the satin/matte thing is only if this is a "life-guitar".

I am considering doing that with an old beater guitar. I was toying with if the steel wool or just doing a matte urathane clearcoat would be easier and as long lasting..

@OP, you don't have pickup rings, BUT you could add rings, or a pickguard.

And what do you mean about gold hardware being too expensive?

Those are $13.50 each. If that is too expensive, then you're on a sticker budget.

Re: How to liven up a black guitar?

As some of you might know I have a Charvel San Dimas model guitar, an older MIJ model, and I love it to death. I just wish it wasn't black. Its ok for me on a metal guitar, but it just doesn't sit too well with me on an '80s hot rodded strat type guitar. Any suggestions?

I've already decided I'm gonna switch out the switch cap for a thinner white one. I'm not a huge fan of the big black plastic one they use. I might just change the knobs to some bright retina-burning couloured strat knob. Here's what it looks like now alongside its evil twin( my brothers JEM):

Any tips on how to make this thing look cooler?

*edit* I've ruled out changing the pickups, I'm pretty happy with how they are now.

Of course, those pickup rings can come in chrome too...

Actually, go to a metalworks, get some diamond plate, have a pickguard cut out of said diamond plate for it. A pickguard might work really well to break up the black surface for you.

Gold hardware for sure but as said, it can get pricey.

Now, if you are looking at swapping pickups, zebras will look great in it rather than double-black.

Cream binding is awesome on black guitars but that'd be more work than you'd want to do on that one.

I'd start with zebra pickups and racing stripes, ala KWS Strat.

You can still mount new pickups, that's what I did to make my PRS distinctive. White knobs, white pups, chrome switch tip. And trem tip if applicable.

For 80s as all get out, pink or green!

Re: How to liven up a black guitar?

To class it up: gold

To liven it up: stripes

...but for that particular guitar I'd vote +1 on the chrome and diamond plate

Stickers it is.

Or nothing.

Or stickers on back.

Or nothing.

Resist temptation. That is the dark beauty of black guitars - because they look good just black! The coolest thing you can do is change some knobs, tuners and pickup covers for accents, but that's about it.

You could do what Satch did to the Black Dog Ibanez back in the day... get a few paint pens and go to town!!

Dude just keep it black. I was worried my LP would be a bit too tame compared to the wild axes I usually swing, but it's me that looks the part, not the guitar. It's just the way I am on stage.

Re: How to liven up a black guitar?

If you don't like the Black finish , you could just sand the finish off and re-paint it another color to your liking. If you're not sure on how to do it yourself, have a pro do it.

What I meant by it being too expensive isn't the mounting rings. I meant replacing the Floyd, nut, knob, switch, and tuners to gold hardware. Especially since gold is the most expensive hardware colour.

As for stripes, they sound really cool. Its a pretty good idea. Theoretically I wouldn't have to strip off the finish right? A pickguard sounds cool too. I take it a standard strat pickguard won't fit. I'm not 100% the volume knob is in the same position as a real strat. I'll see if I can get a So-Cal pickguard, but the pickguards are black too.

Anyone here tried body reveal binding? It sounds cool.

Re: How to liven up a black guitar?

get somew really thin pinstripes

follow the outside contour of the body

bam

faux binding
