HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Two pickups I keep coming back to are Pearly Gates and Screamin Demon. How might these pair up in a hybrid, and would you go A5 or A2?

I to have wondered what a PG hybrid would sound like. I want the rawness of the pearly gates with a vintage sound, but I want to fatten it up with out loosing the PG edge. I havent come across a duncan yet that I would consider fat or thick sounding. Any suggestions?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

For those who already have a hybrid and are used to them i have a duncan mod to add that goes amazing with ANY hybrid. Use duncan's spin a split mod with the hybrid. this is one of the best tone mods because if you do split your hybrid, you can control how much of the split coil is outputting. this aloows you to blend the screw coil to achieve a perfect split coil tone that a full split coil can do:cool2:

I did a couple of 59B/C5/A5 that would rip yer noggin off, read post 617 in this thread. I had to tone mine down a little with A4 that worked really good for a Les Paul that I use for classic/southern rock, blues, wrote about that in post 624. One thing I look at is Seymour's tone chart, the numbers for bass mids and treble and I try to pick coils that somewhat match. That's one of the reasons the 59B/C5 sounds so good.

The Pearly Gates is similar to the 59 but has more mids. You can see the difference in the tone chart, and also an earlier thread said the same thing when the PG is used in the hybrid. That's cool to know because I got a customer with a pair of PGs that wants to hybridize them, now I know a little more of what to tell him can be expected out of the PG/C5 as compared to the 59/C5.

That said, if it's fat you are wanting, with the edge of the hybrid, I would suggest using something like a Fralin PAF wound to 9.0k or even better, 9.5k. Those bad boys have a sledge hammer bottom end. Haven't had the pleasure of hearing a SD 78, but it's 9.0k and I would suspect it has a killer low end too. I got one of those combinations in mind to do soon as well.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I have made an PG/custom hybrid with an alnico5. It's tighter and dirtier with a bit more miss than a 59/custom hybrid. it's about as hot.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Anybody used a Brobucker in one of these yet? I gotta try one, the pickup fairies at fleabay tossed one my way, bring it on USPS!

And now all we have to do is go to a dealer

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I'm going to put together a 59/Custom Custom and have a few questions.
1) If I like it with a particular mag type, can I get another mag like it so I can put two of the same together ?
2) Has anyone tried this with an alnico 8 ?
3) How do you know what gauge wire is used in the different PU's ?
This sounds very intriguing and I can't wait to try it.

Well, you wouldn't be able to make two of exactly the same thing, because each pickup has a screw coil and a slug coil. If you use the Custom's slug coil in your first hybrid, you'll have a Custom screw coil for the second hybrid. For example.

For the magnets, a lot of the guys get theirs here:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Thank you, I am looking to use this in the bridge with a P90 in the neck. Not sure which P90 would be best suited tone and power wise for this application tho. Any suggestions?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

^I think it should work fine. but if you end up needing more power in the P90, just swap the magnets in it for stronger ones.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Thanks. I like the look of a P90 as well as the sound. I was thinking of the Custom or the Hot Soapbar. I did notice that the Phat Cat has a little higher resonant peek than those two, and a lower ohm reading but a similar tone chart to the Custom Soapbar. I'm thinking that the Custom is a little hotter too ?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hi there pearly gates/custom users. I've been reading through all the post hear and I have some questions. I have an edwards LP with a pearly gates set in it that I really like, but the bridge could use alittle more output. The guitar is setup for standard and drop D tuning with 10 gauge strings. I use this guitar for classic rock to 90's metal like Tool. My questions are how would the pg/c hybrid set compair to the pg set EQ wise and output? If I were to do a pg/custom hybrid set do you think I'll lose any mids on the neck? How do you think a pg/custom set will balance with each other? I know it's subjective, but if making the hybrid set would it be better with an A2 in the neck and A5 in the bridge? I mainly play rythym stuff. I know thats alot of questions but I'm thinking I want to try this hybrid. I have a 59n, custom, and a jb p/u's and several mags A2, A5, A5 rough, A8, and a ceramic. Thanks in advance

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Make 2 Hybrids using your PG Bridge and the Custom... leave the PG Neck where it is at... great pickup!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Thanks for the quick reply BackToRock. Quick question. Should I try an A5 mag first being that my playing style is maily rythym, or an A2. I prefer a tighter heavier bass responce.
