HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I just made a pair of Brobucker/C5 hybrids with A5, damn man the problem now is that I don't have enough guitars to test them in!:friday:

Ok I am gonna rape and pillage my parts drawers and butcher the daylights out of an asian tele body, this is getting to the point that it would be very cool to be able to swap magnets while the pickup is sitting under the strings. Can't believe I finally found some good use for a BATHTUB rout!:naughty:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Okay, I've been thinking jumping into the world of hybrids...
How would a A5 PGb/JazzN or a JazzN/Demon hybrid...to be used in the neck of a Les Paul with a Custom 8 in the bridge.

Too much mismatch with the Demon?
Do you still get the same harmonic complexity with hybrids that use the same type of wire?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I don't want to be blasphemous but my current ash strat bridge hb is an all GFS A2 VEH/Classic II hybrid, and it's killer.
Pretty low output but tons of dynamic and a nice mids attitude with some single coil sparkle, a very nice neighbor of the other two sc pickups.
Pretty amazing considering I made it without expecting too much from it, just an experiment since I hated my stock VEH and I had a Classic II neck around unused.

thats not blasphemous at all, sounds like a good idea actually!:)
Thats what bachtorocks whole idea was is to get two pups meshed together to make ONE great model. the JB/custom is another great hybrid but many dont even know it

You guys with drawers full of Gibson pickups need to try 490/498 and 490/500 hybrids. I just did a 490/498 with a UOA5 and it's real nice. The neck spaced Gibsons work with reg spaced Duncans too. I've done a couple 490R/Demon's now, I love that one in the neck.

King, how does the 490/500 sound in comparison to the JB/custom? I have a couple 500Ts that I was going to sell to make more JB/customs, but if the hybrids sound similar, maybe I should just get a 490 and get my hybrid on...:P

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Nah, it won't be like a JB/C. It more resembles a 59/C, but with more midrange and has that Gibson pickup grit, I dig it.

I think it needs an alnico, the UOA5 in mine is perfect. I did the other one with 500T mags for metalmachine and it's nasty (in a cool way). The top end is pretty bright, almost like a split ceramic humbucker, I keep thinking split DD, but louder, and has some 500T in it. I dunno, I'm waiting to see what he thinks of it. I'd use 250 or 300 pots with it if I were gonna use it myself. It was a 498T originally, so results might be a little different with an actual 500T.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Does bachtorock get not only recognition for this contribution to the guitar world but also compensation from SS for this?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

would a seth lover or a jazz be considered the lowest output humbuckers from duncan? I wanted to try that with a custom coil.

I think my 59/CC A5 hybrid is too hot. Looking for a sharper "attack" on my lead sounds. 59/CC is very close, just need a little more edge without destroying the low end. Low end is perfect. Is that even possible or am I smoking something???

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

i am sure it has been asked but how about a distortion and invader or distortion and 59

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I broke a hybrid I was working on. When I pulled the coils apart, the white wire going to the slug coil just come out! It is where the white wire disappears in that clear tape wrapping the copper wire.

Does anybody know how to fix it?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

You'll have to unwrap the coil a little and find the loose end *VERY CAREFULLY*, the coil wire is seriously close to the thickness of a hair. When you find the loose end take some fine sandpaper, fold it over in half, and gently pull it over the wire end, this removes the enamel (or whatever the insulation is). Solder your lead wire to this end, and re-tape the coil. Test it with a meter to make sure you didn't blow it again.

Next time be more careful.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

sounds SOOOOOO sweet in my charvel with Alnico 2 mag.

There was a short pair on ebay that the guy said was from an early 60s paf, pat, or p-90. Went for $46 + ship. seems a little steep. bought some alnico 2s and 4s from addictionFX instead.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

A2 mags for $46? LOL. I'll bet they sold too, didn't they?

So you were able to fix your pickup?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

A2 mags... hehe

Last July me and my boss (who also plays guitar) were laughing because there was a price tag off of a 1958 Gibson Les Paul that sold for almost $550.

the only thing I could imagine someone doing with that is if they actually had a 58 and could say they had the original price tag.

no, could not find the coil end wire. was thinking about unwinding it and then rewinding. Sacrifice for science. Would love to learn the hidden art of re-wiring.

They sold alright. I was pissed, I wanted them. If I heard no difference between them and my addiction FX A2s, I would put them back out to wolves.

Kinda cool to own a vintage part and use it me thinks.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid
