HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

. . . not to mention, they don't have a forum to talk about it. :D

I would not recommend the use of a NECK coil in making a pickup for the BRIDGE position...
I liken it to putting the wider tires on the front of a high performance car... it's just bass ackwards

Thx Bach, that's what I figured but thoughtI'd get a second opinion... Off to go buy a 59 bridge to do this right!!!

Thx again!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I will be making a few Hybrids this week... does anybody want better/more detailed pictures?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Though the original pictures are good, new ones are always good.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

more pics more pics. i just bought a custom 5. now all i need to do is try all the magnets in it, and then buy a 59 and try to make this happen!!!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I will be making one for a Forum Member this weekend... will take some great pictures!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Okey dokey... made 51501984's Hybrid today... new pictures taken of the whole process... see beginning of this thread(that's PAGE 1)!

A few additional notes:

Often, the magnet in a pickup from the factory is not perfectly centered legthwise under the coils... I always make sure to center it for best response while the potting wax is hot... it should be slightly in from the edge on each side... notice that the coils are the same size and shape... the Custom uses more turns of a thinner wire to put roughly the same amount of copper on the coil!

I slightly stagger the screws similar to a modern/vintage strat pattern(G-pole lower) for added string to string balance.

Also, If you measure the DCR while the pickup is still warm it will read slightly high

Interesting thought... if I had to place numbers per the Duncan EQ chart I would guess something like 6/5/7 based off the 59 model...

My other favorite Bridge pickup is the Phat Cat... Duncan has it tagged as 6/5/7!

Other pickups I use are the Twangbanger... 5/5/7, the Little 59... 6/5/7, APS-1(only in neck & middle)... 4/4/7, Jerry Donahue... 5/5/7, Five-Two for Strat... 5/5/6.

Seems to be a similar response pattern between all these!

Once again, the master LordRock has come through in stunning crystal detail. Cheers to the hybrid Master.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

How do you think the EQ changes with the custom coil and the '59 coil reversed? Or the AII vs. AV vs. Ceramic?

I have not noticed any change in tone or response unless the pickup is mounted in a Kramer Baretta style slanted humbucker guitar where the screws line up more under the wound strings and the slugs more under the plain strings... the Custom Screw/59 Slug seems to sound better in this scenario.
I don't recommend a ceramic in this pickup... the A2 will obviously have a softer attack and less aggressive bass and treble than an A5 so it is commonly perceived as more midrangey ... I believe it is more of a dynamic response perception than an actually frequency response difference.
The numbers on the tone chart are not so accurate in some cases, especially the huge difference between a Custom Custom and a Custom 5... the magnet change is really just a fine-tuning of the basic response provided by the coils.

This thread may well have changed my life......in a tonefull way, that is.

Incredible pics BachToRock. I can't wait to get my first hybrid from you.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

This is a fantastic thread thank you for the pictures.. I think I am going to try this out as soon as I am done refinishing my new/old "the paul".

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

What is the inductance (henry) of the 59/custom?
How about the inductance of the 59N/Jazz for the neck?
Just curious as I recently read the typical strat is 2.3, PAF is 4.4 and some shred pickups go as high as 8.0.

BachToRock: On the 59N/Jazz, which screw plate do you prefer to keep for coil splitting?

I have no freakin idea... no way or need to measure it?
I measure tone with my ears...
