HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I play Gibsons and various other set-neck, Gibson style guitars and the 59/cc hybrid did for me what few other pickups could do. I tried and liked different things about the c5,cc, pg, 59, dimarzio vhpaf and the rio bbqs. i made a hybrid out of that 59 and cc and it really got me far closer to that elusive something that the others were missing. individual results and tastes may vary, but from clean to high gain, this hybrid really captured what i wanted all those other models to do.
i started with the a5 but have since switched to the a2 magnet. i feel it is warmer and fuller or maybe a bit of both. bach to rock will make you one, it is money well spent and costs basically the same as a new Duncan in the box.

Great choice! I prefer the A2 magnet on the 59B/Custom Hybrid I have in my Love Rock....Didn't care as much for the A5.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

No real scoop, in regards to DiMarzios patents... the coils are purposefully not identical unlike the original humbucker design which specifies coils that are intended to be identical with the sole purpose of eliminating hum.

It is not as simple as just the same resistance with different gauge wire... this :smack: has no idea of what he is talking about... imagine how bad a 43 gauge wire coil would sound in the bridge wound to the typical PAF 42 guage range of 4k...

Now, as you and I know... a 43 gauge coil at around 7k(it's optimal range) and a 42 gauge coil at around 4k mixed together produces an awesome pickup!

Bachtorock been caught up in your hybrid threads lately, never really noticed much mention of people making a hybrid with the PG's. I suppose they are mismatched already why break one up.

Just curious though if you have modded one? If so what you mixed it with and your results.

I use both the PGB/Custom and the 59B/Custom and I don't notice any difference in tone unless I swap magnets....Both read around 11.5K...

I always use the Custom's slug coil and then the screw coil from either the 59 or the PG as my main Hybrid...I usually ena up either loaning out or selling the second Hybrid to a forum brother like Jumpmarine! LOL

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I consider the Pearly Gates just a variation of the 59... it just uses an A2 magnet and has very slightly mis-matched coils... it, as well as the SETH is essentially the same coil as a 59. You will not find any more coil to coil variance than you would with the Duncan standard production tolerance of +/- 5%

I consider the PG, Seth and 59 all the same when making BRIDGE Hybrids... however, the NECK PG and SETH have less windings than a 59 model

You're right;

" claim:

1. In a transducer for a stringed musical instrument whose output is to be electrically amplified, in which said transducer includes a pair of coils mounted adjacent each string of said instrument, the improvement in which said coils have individual axes and substantially the same number of turns of electrically conducting wire wound thereon, and the wires constituting said coils are of different gauges.

2. A transducer as in claim 1, in which said coil wires range in diameter between about 0.00078 inch and 0.00400 inch.

3. A transducer as in claim 2, in which the wire diameter of one of said coils is about 0.00249 inch, and the wire diameter of the other of said coils is about 0.00198 inch. "

However, you don't have to treat melike a douchebag and an idiot who slaps his own head.

Sorry... I am biased towards mis-information posts.
I :smack: myself almost all the freakin time... especially yesterday when I destroyed one of my Phat Cats trying to remove some windings!

ouch, that hurts. I ruined a DMZ Super 2 the same way.

You're alright Bach.:fingersx: :smack:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Another cool combo might be the DMZ Super Distortion and a Super 2.

Just talking out of nowhere here, so a PG matched up with a JB would be an odd hybrid combination?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

how bout a dimebucker/ invader hybrid? or a hot rails/ hot rails? i might just try this once i get money. and the jazz/ 59 hybrid sounds right up my alley for a neck pickup, too. thanks for all the great info.

would a ceramic on the bass side and one of the alnicos on the treble side be too mismatched?

And I ruined a perfectly working bridge Fender Fat 50 trying to move the poles down....Broke the winding and it became a paperweight....:smack: :laugh2:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

This is a great thread....!!

Would there be any ill effects with using a 59 neck coil with a custom custom?? I don't have a 59 bridge so I have to use a 59 neck if I'm gonna try this??

Would it be dramatically different than using a coil from a 59 bridge if I had one??

thx and this is very informative!!!

I would not recommend the use of a NECK coil in making a pickup for the BRIDGE position...
I liken it to putting the wider tires on the front of a high performance car... it's just bass ackwards

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

i admit i haven't read all the previous pages of this thread but, i was wondering why i don't see much talk of dimarzio hybrids and magnet swapping? is the method for making dimarzio hybrids the same as duncan ones?

i was glancing over dimarzio's website and it looked to me like all their humbuckers used either ceramic or alnico 5 mags. not sure if they do this to compensate for their general abundance of mids and lows (according to their tone chart anyways) or what?

I've been thinking about making a hybrid dimarzio pup or two with maybe an A2, A3, or A4 mag. Is this a bad idea?

I'm really sorry if i hijacked this thread (please point me in the right direction if this has been discussed before), but any info would really be appreciated.
