How to make a Marshall JMP into a shred machine?

How can I really turn a Marshall JMP into a shred machine? I know a distortion and overdrive pedal would do the trick just fine, but what other tools methods could I use? I know it can be turned into a great sounding metal/shred machine because, hey, look at Ungwie Malmsteen. I may not like his playing all the time but he has great tone, and he uses a Marshall JMP.
Thanks for any ideas!

A friend of mine had a soldano mod that was basically a tube and some other stuff stuck on that you could replace a preamp tube with. With the mod in, the amp sounded like George Lynch. Without it, AC-DC.

Yngwie uses an old DOD overdrive of some type.

Put hotter preamp tubes like some balanced, high gain Electro Harmonix 12AX7EH's or Sovtek 12AX7LPS's in it and hotter edgier output tubes like Electro Harmonix EL34's or SED EL34's with a little hotter bias. A Soldano Hot Mod preamp tube will also add a lot of gain if you can find one. oh yeah, crank it like callous said.

I'd just use the best tubes and speakers (G12H-30's are what I like) you can afford, make sure the amp is properly biased and then crank it up. Satriani uses a DS-1. Jeff Beck uses a Ratt. I don't think you need to do much to those amps in the way of mods. Just goose them with a nice overdrive and turn them up. Lew

Haha, I thought you meant Ratt the band! I love those guys.

Most Boss OD/Distortion pedals sound amazing, and if you're not happy with it, you can mod it. I'd say put something out in front, maybe even a treblebooster and just drive your amp into high-gain territory by pushing the preamp harder.

My man lew is right...there are no mods needed...people really need to STOP modding old JMP Marshalls...there will be none left stock! :smack:

Hmmm, thanks for the info guys. Cranking it really isn't an option though, so pedals would really be the way to go, maybe a modded Boss DS-1 and an OD together, or I may go with my original plan and get an Engl Screamer 50 combo/head. Thanks for all the help guys!

If you want to crankit...get a THD Hotplate...they work wonders...then matbe a Rat of a Spina DS-1!

Re: How to make a Marshall JMP into a shred machine?

Yup I agree..some kind of attentuator, and a good boost/pedal. A Super OD or TS into my 1987 is just phenomenal. No need for a mod.

Re: How to make a Marshall JMP into a shred machine?

The best way to do it is just cram a good overdrive pedal into the amp's face, load it with properly biased tubes (I prefer JJ's) and good speakers (greenbacks or G12H30s are my fave) and crank that s*** up!

If volume is an issue then a HotPlate or a MASS will help. But playing really loud is the only way to nail that tone. Mods are only for those who feel that stock is not enough and are willing to permanently alter a vintage amp.
