How to make a pickups sound like Big Dipper?

Ok So can we all come together and realize this isn't a "Do you like Big Dipper Pickups" Thread, and it sure isn't a "Do you like John Mayer" Thread.

I tried many guitars many the day i bought the JM Strat, and I sure didn't buy it because of his Signature, but it was truely the best one to my ears.

Unfortunetly The JM is expensive, and I love it, so I am not going to tow it around to every tom dick and harry's to jam.
So I need a cheaper set up to take around, but I would like it to sound as much like the JM as possible.

So what pickups sound the most like Big Dippers, or what would I have to do to a set up pickups to make them sound like that.

they key to the big dippers is that they are pretty mid scooped and also underwound. fender custom shop 69s get you in the ballpark but your best bet would be to find to order a set of duncans or something and request they be underwound.

basically any underwound vinatge strat set. even going through a custom shop will probably be cheaper than what those pups sell for on ebay.

agreed that the JM is a really nice guitar irrespective of your opinion of mayer (i dig him)

i played one at a GC once that was set up HORRIBLY (action about 3/4" off the fretboard - no lie) ... and it still sounded amazing ... i ended up with an eric johnson model, again, not 'cus of the signature, but because of the feel and the sound (i gave a slight edge to the maple board over the rosewood on the JM)

i say bring the JM wherever you play ... life's too short for a B rig ... if you are worried about damage, then don't .... ding's happen - they are guitars not museum pieces .. i take my EJ strat and PRS everywhere ... play the snot out of em and let the wear and tear show - builds-in mojo and all that ...

if you are worried about theft, then maybe you need to reconsider where you play

as for the pickups themselves, cant help ya .. i dont even know if they are A2s or A5s ... but are you really gonna wanna load up an otherwise cheap guitar with expensive pickups if the risk of theft is that high? ...


and yeah, if you find a reasonable facsimile of the big dippers, let us know

Thank you, and in all reality I probably will continue to take it where it is needed being that it always pissed me off when people had nice guitars but never played them because they were "nice",
I was really just looking for a backup, a sub for string breaks to what have you, as I know (after fourteen years of playing guitar, especially after this last search for a fender) no two guitars, even if they are the same make and model, sound exactly thie same.
I know its only one big :banghead: excuse after another but I just wanted to see what you all thought.
