How to record an amp ?

Re: How to record an amp ?

And decent closed back headphones. Very important.

Agreed, although my final acid test (the same acid test used by Martin Hannet when he produced Unknown Pleasures by JD) is does it sound good through a car stereo. You can reproduce a surprising amount of acoustics through a good car stereo and speaker setup. I sometimes find that I can hear more that way, than through headphones!

I do not own a car, so that option is not open to me. :)
I do ride the NYC subway every day, though, which has a pretty insane noise floor. I play my mixes at low level whilst riding on the train and it helps check what are the most prominent elements in the mix ...

This is grossly underrated by folks and it simply puts things into perspective quickly, doesn't it?

Any time I've played with mixes and wanted to get the instruments to sit right, I'd always adjust the overall volume to ascertain what jumps out the most and tweak from there.

Re: How to record an amp ?

Although recording techniques are necessary for a making a good recording, they aren't necessary for recording a good song. Sometimes, scratch that, most of the time people getting into recording spend most of their time convincing themselves they need x amount of equipment or better equipment just to make a recording. Don't get bogged down in equipment G.A.S. just record a good song. $100,000 in equipment can't make a crap song into a hit.
