I may be misinterpreting your comment, but I bought a nice Cordoba Uke from MF when it was their SDOTD, and it's tuning is bizarre. The 2nd string down, is lower pitch than the one above. I've never gotten used to that.

A ukulele is tuned with the same intervals as the top four strings on a guitar, except the low string is usually tuned an octave up. With an 8 string ukulele, its the same tuning as the top four courses of a 12 string

Mandolin is tuned like a violin
Mandola is tuned like a viola
Mandocello is tuned like a cello, which is what GuitarStv posted.
The tunings are different, but those are all in straight 5ths.
Uke and guitar have an odd assortment of 4ths and 3rds, which is different again from what GuitarStv posted.
They mandolin and uke tunings sound very different to my ear. Like comparing Nashvile tuning to a tiple.
8-string uke tuning isn't really standardized. It can be as you say, or the low g and high A pairs might be the same pitch, while the middle C and E have an octave string in the course.

It's sound bright and pinky, but will actually be kinda different. The 5ths of the mandolin tuning make for a wider chord than you get on a uke, where the notes are tighter together. This is even more noticeable to me on a mandocello or tenor guitar (maybe because my ears are used to the mid-range of a guitar than the plinky stuff).

I could have used this 15 years ago. The touring violinist for a band I see often, whipped out a mandolin for an encore at a show and did some amazing playing. I was chatting with her afterwards and telling her how awesome and impressive it was for her do that! When I finished ranting, she just smiled and said, "Oh, it's tuned just like a violin." Zero musical cred with her since then...

I think Chistopher gets the Manson Guitar Works MBM-2 with the built in Fuzz Factory.

My girlfriend out of high school was a violinist and she had a mandolin. Her teacher always complained that when she played mandolin it messed up her hands. And she said to me the first time she tried a fretted instruement, she thought is was a joke. "You mean you can put your finger ANYWHERE behind the fret??"
Seashore knows me. When I studied classical, lute music was a big part of the repertoire, so yeah, I'd work out how to rock that.
