Excerpt:

A WOOD GUITAR can be a fickle thing. Oh sure, the best of them sing with tone to die for. But let it get too hot or too cold, or too humid or too dry, and that beautiful voice can change. Alternative materials like carbon fiber skirt these issues, but lack the traditional aesthetic of a hardwood guitar.

El Capitan, the new six-string from Blackbird Guitars, provides the look, sound, and beauty of a hardwood instrument without the fuss or ecological concerns. It’s made of Ekoa, a proprietary composite of flax linen and bio-resin made from industrial waste. The company claims the material is lighter than carbon fiber and stiffer than Sitka spruce, the preferred material for the best soundboards. “We like to say it’s old-growth wood without the worry,” says founder Joe Luttwak.

Interesting. Sounds pretty good (actually, that's the most pleasant sounding playing I've ever heard from Henry Kaiser)...

I really dig the concept and love how that thing looks...just don't like it enough to drop $3k on it...

Bio-resin made from industrial waste? Sounds like soylent green to me

I really like the look of that top. If it played well, I could see myself dropping that kind of cash on it.

Hadnt heard of this kind of build, but composites are a way of the future. Really wish Id snagged one of those guitars a few years back made of that plastic type material.. Played one and it played pretty well and was supposed to be impervious to elements. Gets hot here in the sunshine state and wanted to get one I could keep in the car to play on lunch breaks and stuff.

Id love to have a Rainsong Graphite guit..

Next they should do a fluoride guitar. Kids could lick it to help with their green smiles.

I agree. I've played a guitar with a phenolic board (Epiphone uses them on some of their signature guitars) and it was wonderful. I'm not an environmentalist or anything like that, but I like the idea of using less woods. eventually guitars like these could be cheaper than a wood guitar and can sound just as good.
