Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

I just love single coils and a clean/overdriven Fender amp. What are some "definitive songs" that employ a humbucker w/a Fender amp? Although I'm sure there are hundreds of songs out there, I just don't know any for sure.

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Sex Pistols!-Steve Jones did all his rythym tracks with a silverface twin.
Rolling Stones-Can't You Hear Me Knocking-that's Keith with the rythym pickup of his black Tele Custom.
Ted Nugent-All his early stuff is the Byrdland thru a Twin.
List goes on and on!!

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Jerry Garcia used Twins thru most of the 70's with a Travis Bean guitar.
Johnny Winter Used Twins with his Firebirds (minis) But still Buckers.
Duane Allman Used a BF Princeton w/t his LP on the layla album.
The list does go on and on, But these are the 1st guys to come to my mind.

Listen to the "Let it Be" and "Abbey Road" albums. Lennon had P90's on his Casino and I know that Harrison was using a Les Paul for some tracks on "Let it Be", possibly on "Abbey Road" too. I don't have any pictures handy but I think they were using SF Twins.

wow... it must have been modded or even been OD pedal driven?

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

I do know one thing about Gibsons into Fenders......buy Seth Lovers, 59's, or Antiquities.
I was playing my LP w/50th Ann. Seths into my 4-10 Bassman LTD today, and it's a magical combination. Hotter pickups sound OK, but the lower output Duncan humbuckers have so much character, vibe, and clarity, that Fender amps just sound fat and sweet with them.

Yeah, I wanna replace the pups in a gat I got from a friend a while ago. Was playing soft rock on the weekend with Invaders through a Fender Twin - getting some really nice sounds by tweaking right...but I can only imagine how much nicer it would be with some more trad sounding pups...

That's the key to the sound a JB would kill a Twin but a Seth or Alnico II Pro would sound great!

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Listen to anything by BRMC. They use 335s into Fender twins - although they putt hem through a cr@pload of OD effects first...

Oh man...you're gonna make me spend too much money now...

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Some of the early Fleetwood Mac (Green era) had Fender amps. And a lot of reverb. :)

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

From The White Album on, The Beatles were using Fender blackface amps with a variety of guitars. Same with Neil Young, but I think his Les Paul had P90's in it ... am I right?

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Peter Green uses a strat these days, but the early fleetwood Mac stuff was mostly his Les Paul. He used Fender and Orange amps, IIRC.

Derek Trucks gets a great tone with his SG thru a Fender Super Reverb. B.B. King uses Twin Reverbs alot.

I think that's also true (rather my preference) with single coils...

Thanks for the comments, gentlemen.

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Humbucker through Fender amp tone? Try Mike Bloomfield playing a vintage sunburst on "Super Session", "Live Adventures..." or "Fillmore East: The Lost Concert Tapes 12/13/68". Mmm, mmm good!

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

They're don't really have the status as the suggestions most people are making but I think it would be unfair not to mention the Strokes. Particularly the intro to Last night. The most exciting thing about this sound is that they're using Blues Devilles 4x10's with Epiphone 335 copies. I'm not exactly sure what guitars they're using but this setup is a considerably more affordable to most of us on a more realistic budget.

Anything else by the Strokes as well.

Thanks,
Benja

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

Just about all of the first 3 Doobie Bros albums (their best stuff!) was mostly Gibsons thru various Fender amps.

Re: Humbuckers and Fender Amps?

anything by minus the bear.

prs guitars with the neck pickup being played on, through some sort of fender combo and out a mesa 2x12. sounds really good, especially for their style of music.

B.B. King uses the Gibson Lab Series amps (L9 if I remember correctly) almost exclusively and has for many many many years. It's a solid state for all of you who don't know :)
