Humbuckers for slide

Re: Humbuckers for slide

well, i don't play slide very well ... but i like to listen to duane allman ... i am guessing something like a 59 or a seth would get the job done to start to approximate tone like his ...

... well, that and a coricidin (sp?) bottle :D

cheers

Re: Humbuckers for slide

I'd like to hear some responses to this as well! I love the Duane Allman slide technigue/sound. I wonder if the Les Pauls he used had stock pups?

Re: Humbuckers for slide

I think lower output pickups work better for slide. The '59, Seth Lover, or Pearly Gates would be a good choice.

Re: Humbuckers for slide

Slide sounds really good with a nice midrange growl to it. I'm planning on using the Pearly Gates in my electric slide-only guitar. (That is, if I ever get a chance to finish it...)

Re: Humbuckers for slide

this is going to sound really stupid. but ive found that the best pick ups for slide are the cheapest nastest thing i can find. Dont no why, they just seem to make it sound more.... dirty..... it even works with acoustics aswell, ive own a national style N an i sold it cause it didnt sound as good or "real" as on a cheap ass all laminated acoustic. but i geuss it depends on what type of slide you want to play, i like the real old style stuff, robert johnson etc. An thos old players didnt use expensive guitars, so i geuss it kinda translates over, cheap pick ups= cheap dirty sound.. kinda like they had... if you want a more smooth, glassy sound like Duane Allman they probably a '59 or pearly gates, would be more suited...

Actually I'd really like a nasty hound dog taylor type of sound, but no-one seems to know of a pickup that does that...

Re: Humbuckers for slide

I found that the bridge pick up off a really cheap epiphone les paul special, the one with a bolt on neck an the lamiated body did the trick. Not sure what the pick up was, i think it was one of those generic korean things. that every cheap guitar has.

Re: Humbuckers for slide

59 or seth lover or pearly gates is what you want........ pearly gates would probably sound a bit more aggressive, 59 would be clearer with more high end zing, and seth lover would be a bit smoother but creamy and juicy. Id probably get a Seth if i wanted to use one for slide

You've got to spend sometime on eBay looking for some old Teisco's or Goya's Buy one of the really crappy ones with the cool pups like these:

and then put them in a strat or similar. Bludave has a really cool little Harmony he should share somepictures of that sounded great for slide, similar type of sound to my ears.

I like high powered singles like the QP and P-90s for slide but the A2P is a killer as well. It really sings!

Re: Humbuckers for slide

Well, the Phat Cats aren't humbuckers, but they are great pups for slide work. For me, the WCR Fillmore pup is a favorite for humbucker-flavored slide playing. Big, fat, clear and punchy. Any of the SD PAF types will do nicely. Antiquities in a LP are nice for Mick Taylor slide tones. Those Phat Cats tho...for on-the-edge-of-breakup slide tone, I'd give them a listen.

Yeah I'd love some of those! Thet cost an arm and a leg though, right? Bludave you out there? Yeah I've been thinking of some p-90's too...

I agree, a '59 would be closest to what Duane used in his '64 SG. I used to use a Corcidan bottle back when I played the Dunae stuff in bands, but actually I think you get better tone with a thicker piece of glass. Also, use heavier guage strings.

I was already to say Seth Lovers or Antiquitys....thinking lots of mids and alnico 2 for Duane's slide tone. But you are right: he used the SG for slide and those were alnico 5 pickups like the Duncan 59's.

Ry Cooder uses the bridge pickup out of an old Supro lap steel mounted on his Strat.

I have a few of those VALCO made old Supro/Airline/Silvertone/Oahu, etc. lap steels from the 50's.

Awesome slide tone! Cheap too. You can usually find half a dozen or more old Supros on Ebay for around $200 for the whole guitar!

If I could play slide guitar without soundimg like a wounded cat I would...but everytime I put a bottle on my finger it sounds real...REAL bad...but if it didn't I would use something with p-90, and a solid mahogany body...a Les Paul Jr. is a killer slide guitar as far as Im concerned! Unless you are going for an old crappy tone on purpose...if you are just get a Teisco or a 4 pickup Goya and go to town Hound Dog Style!
