Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Yes, the neck looks like a hot rails or fast track, but there is a very quick snapshot of the bridge pickup at 0:32 that shows an all-black dual blade akin to an X2N. Very hard to see, but still clear !

I don't see that either, looks like an unmarked EMG to me!
I was going to suggest they used a Duncan Distortion for the first album, since they seem to have found it difficult to control the amount of pinch harmonics they were getting!

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I had this mag back in 91 - Scotti's guitar is a mutt with a dinky body that his tech built for him. For the life of me I can't remember what the pickups were, or if he even mentioned them in the article. Snake talks about his Ibanez Iceman that he got from a pawnshop...

Love the sound of the Rivera amps though. If you can find a clip of Skid Row on SNL playing "Monkey Business", you'll hear one of the best guitar tones ever heard...

edit: ok, maybe not as awsome as I remember it, but still cool: http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/...w&current=SkidRow-MonkeyBusinessLiveOnSNL.flv

I read in an old Guitar World that Scotti used a JB in a Jackson, Dave used an X2N and PRS HFS

Sad to say but...Back in the day we had real guitar mags !

Uncle Tom's Cabin transcribed? THIS ROCKS!
The solo/phrasing and tone on this song is still unequaled to this day IMHO.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Well, I am unaware of unmarked EMGs.
It's all black and seeing this as quickly as it is, it could very well be an X2N which is all black also with no logo.

The logo could be worn off surely? I just meant it looked like a humbucker with a black cover.

That's the best part about that album - harmonics everywhere! And don't count out the JB for such things. Mine absolutely screams, all the time. Love it.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I can't really see anyone using an X2N for any other purpose than being louder and dirtier than everyone else :D

Ive heard that scotti Hill and Dave Sabo used the Dimarzio X2N on that album.
Along with a pre amp modeling system that i can remember the name of.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

IMO, the X2N is actually a very clean, loud, even voiced pickup with lots of character to it, excellent harmonics, great cut without being harsh and even response due to the blades.

Saying that makes me wanna buy another one right now ! Very smooth lead tone ! Think Steve Vai with David Lee Roth, that's what he used, very nice for a shredder like me.

Yeah, my JBs are great for pinch harmonics, but I don't find myself doing them every couple of seconds to the extent I do with the Distortion! :11:

Thats a cool clip tho! The first time I saw skid, they were opening for bon jovi and they were ok, but sab bach dropped the f bomb and other curses so much, it was ridiculous.. Ive noticed ALOT of opening acts do this. Bon jovi opening for scorpions, Cinderella and Skid opening for bon jovi and others cuss soo much. I think trying to be cool.. When bon jovi headlined, I dont recall them saying much if any curse words..

kinda sad Skid went by so quick.. They were good musicians and Bach has a real rock voice.. IMO. this topic got me checking them on youtube and there is a cool vid of them doing Psycho Therapy live and the bassist is singing it and he impressed me too on the intro to slave to the grind I believe thats the one.. he was wailing on the bass

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I thought I read something that said Skid Row had the same engineer or producer as White Lion, and he had both bands use a Steinberger with EMG's, with the volume and tone controls bypassed, into an ADA MP-1- and even used the same patches for both bands.

It wasn't in a magazine- matter of fact it may be somewhere on this board

I don't see how you get an X2N out of that. It's clearly an EMG with logo worn off or at the least a pickup covered with a black plastic cover. I know the picture quality isn't that detailed and it is dark, but an X2N wouldn't fit a humbucker mounting ring that tightly with no gaps around the edges the way EMGs or plastic covered pickups do. Also if it was an X2N, even though it was black, you'd still see the individual bobbins how they have rounded ends. This pickup is perfectly rectangular with flat edges.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Also the neck Hot Rails pickup is definitely not a Dimarzio as it has 2 individual coils shaped very much like Seymour Duncans, besides the Fast Track 1 or 2 wasn't even invented yet or for that matter any Dimarzio single coil sized blades back in 1988/1989. Dimarzio lists the first single coil dual blade design being introduced in 1991.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I remember seeing an X2N on my better quality VHS taped video of it...
Definitely not an EMG IMO. Why would there be no logo ? How can you take the EMG logo out/off anyways? It's engraved in the casing.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?
