Hybrid Magnets? Ceramic on Low Strings/A5 On high Strings.

Would this work? How could I do this?

I have a JB that's too loose on the Low Strings. I was thinking I could try breaking apart a Ceramic and A5 and making a hybrid. ANy help/info would be appreciated.

Thanks Guys.

I like the idea, but it's too much to ask of a pickup company. I don't think magnet companies will sell half-size pieces. I have a set of Chubtone Tele pickups which are A3 on the wound and A5 on the plain, so I know how it could work on a humbucker. I think the best solution is to just do it yourself.

You'd need both magnets, a vice, and a good saw. I'd probably make sure the polarity is right, then superglue them in the middle and install it in a Custom. I almost think that A5 on the wound and Ceramic on the plain would sound better on a Custom. Your JB with a JB top end and Distortion low end sounds like a great idea too. You could try it both ways and see.

Now you've got me thinking about a great idea.....if it's not too hard to cut magnets. Buy a Custom and a JB. Take both magnets out and chop them in half. The Custom gets the A5 lows and Ceramic highs. The JB gets the Ceramic Distortion lows and the JB A5 highs. 2 pickups that just became more perfect. Essentially a C-5/Custom and a Distortion/JB.

I spoke to Evan about this. they tried it...he flat out said the tone sucked and one magnet would degauss the others and it was more of a headache than it was worth.

I have a Demon with ceramic and A5 magnets cut opposite of what you guys are talking about, but it supports what Mike's saying. My description of the tone jives with what I've heard about an A8 mag in the Demon.

What if the magnets weren't connected?

Re: Hybrid Magnets? Ceramic on Low Strings/A5 On high Strings.

To me, it's almost too much of a hassle to even bother with, since I'm not unhappy with any of my pickups. The idea has always hung around tho.

Sometimes I wonder if Evan just said that to get us off the idea of something that's a collossal pain in the ass......or virtually undo-able He may not even be happy that we went with a magnet that was an extra step in the process. I'm less excited about a parallel axis pickup than I am with simply telling MJ to give us their best rendition of an A8 humbucker. I'm starting to think that polls aren't the best way to go about it....but rather, give them a concept and let THEM run with it.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I guess it's not worth doing :(

It just sucks because I LOVE that signature JB character, especially it's attack characteristics. I LOVE how Vocal it is. But it's just Too Loose on the Low E in this guitar. And it's also a tad too grainy in the higher registers. It's the guitar. It has a loose bottom, and sharp(unfocused) highs. Not a good match for the JB.

I installed a C5 today, and it Totally Smoothed out the highs. And the Low End response is Great! Thumpy, and Tight. But the mids are hollow. No Character. Very Bland. NO Vocal quality. I like some character to the mids. Some of my favorite tones are from Alice In Chains. He used a JB, and I hear those qualities I love about the JB in his tone.

I have a Butt-Load of magnets also. A2's, A3's, A4's, A5's, A6's, A8's, & one or two Ceramics. SO I got some experimenting to do. Maybe a A6 in the JB or C5 would work nice. Then I'll try A8, and Ceramic.

I was thinking about making a Hybrid C5/JB. But I'm affraid that the bad parts of each pickup will shine through more than the good qualities. So I held off.

Back to squre one!

Thanks again guys.

Re: Hybrid Magnets? Ceramic on Low Strings/A5 On high Strings.

I know Duncan has tried magnet splits before, but I've recently wondered what a 59/Custom Hybrid would sound like with half an A4 mag on the bottom 3 strings, and the other half an A3 mag on the highs. That's less of a gap than what you get with A5/A2, and you could still.....potentially.....get the tonal benefits.

But, I wouldn't know.......
