I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Lookin good!
I financed my last guitar purchase with a bank loan - When gas hits bad what other choice do you have?
How much will you be forkin out for one of these? and are you getting enough income at your age to justify the commitment?

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

If you love it as much as love my '57 R.I then it'll be worth it. I would NOT recommend anyone has a loan for a guitar normally, but this one does seem special... just make sure you know what you're getting in to! Good luck and let us know when the big day arrives.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I have calculated and everything will work out fine.

Its gonna cost about 6grand

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I wouldn't take the loan route. What're you playing now, that you think an overpriced guitar from Gibson is worth a financial commitment to improve on it?

But good luck if you do the loan thing.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Six grand?!? Holy moley. There was absolutely no way I would have been prepared to go into that sort of debt for a guitar when I was 17. Or even now for that matter. And if did, I would now have appreciated anyone who would have tried to talk me out of it. I can't help but think at least 3 grand of what you'll be paying for is the name. Remember that.

Doesn't Edwards make a Sykes model? Seems like that may be an excellent alternative, rather than selling your soul to pay for the Gibson. Man I wish I was young and rich...

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Holy sh!t man, I didn't know they were THAT much. I would really think about this... you don't want to get a guiatr that's TOO nice or expensive to play and gig! I did that once with an L.P... it got one scratch and I was fuming, then I sold it! Sorry bud, but even if you were a high earner it's a hell of a lot of cash and the thing is, as nice as it is... if you did get into financial trouble I doubt you'd sell it to clear your debt for quite a while.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Man............

For six grand you can get the ESP custom shop to build your own guitar!

An ESP or Edwards would make a great alternative to a gibson. But if you gotta have a Gibson then you can probably still get a great one for around 2k.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I'm not telling you what to do, but six grand? That's a lot of money, especially if you're financing. I think the edwards route might be a good alternative at about a tenth the price.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Alex, you are living my dream.

But... I would REALLY think twice.

Seriously.

There is not a guitar I want more than that one, but you gotta THINK about this.

Not to assume that you haven't.

Seriously.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I agree with the guys, Axl H. If I were so concerned about John Sykes looks I would buy this guitar:
E-LP-92CD_JS.jpg

for $800 or so and save the resting $5000 for your future studies. It's even worse because you actually have to loan that money.

Or, if getting a good sounding guitar is more important to you than the looks, there are a lot of used Gibson Custom Shop guitars, both Customs and Black Beauty reissues in the $2000-$2500 range.

Remember that John Sykes's personal guitar was a regular '70s Custom (IIRC) with his own appointments like the metal pickguard and two Dirty Fingers humbuckers. If you follow his steps, you will get closer to his personal guitar. And also you'll be proud of yourself and save a lot of money.

If nothing else will convince you, maybe this will:

6k in lessons will get you miles closer to Sykes than 6k in a guitar.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Wow. I'm with everyone else on here.

1) $6k is a whole lot of money for that guitar. I'm assuming you're talking USD, even worse if its in Euros. And is that $6k figuring in interest or are you going to be paying $6k for the guitar + interest? If it is the latter of the two, wow, that is just insane.

2) I would never take out a loan to buy a guitar. It is one thing to put it on a card and pay it off in like 2 months, but to take out a loan!?!?! I can only think of two things I'd want to take out a loan for: a car or a house. God forbid it would get damaged or stolen. Then you are stuck making payments on something you can't even use.

I don't know, this just screams of a bad idea. Don't get me wrong, I'm lusting for a guitar that is way more than I have access to in cash (about half as expesive as the one you want). I could order it through musicians friend (it is exclusive to them) and pay $90 a month and be fine, but I know I'll get raped on the interest rate. The financially prudent thing for me to do is get control of my desires and wait until I sell of some things I have that will allow me to afford it. I would advise you do the same. I know our desire for gear gets the best of us at times, but the smart thing to do is to wait it out until you can really afford it. Loans can truly eff' up your life if they go awry.

Best of luck with your decisions and guitars though. :beerchug:

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Such a loan at age 17?

Sorry man but I don't think that's a good idea. For all you know you might get a clue and prefer Strats next year :)

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

$6000 is alot of money man....especially to spend on just "one" guitar. Why not just buy a couple of black '78 Les Paul Customs instead, and change the pickup mounting rings, pickguard and toggle switch plate to chrome? At least you'll have two then and it'll only run you about $4500 instead...lol.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Way too much. I'd buy a black '90''s or newer real LP Custom, and John Sykes it. Pickup rings, pickguard, toggle washer, and knobs. Pickups to taste. Probably cost around $2500. Less that half price.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I'd personally go after the Edwards. $6K is a ton of cash. Get yourself a loan calculator and look at the bottom line - how much are you paying with interest? I don't know how banks operate over there, but here personal loans carry pretty high rates. Are you prepared to pay $8-10K for that guitar?
