I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

$6000 is alot of money man....especially to spend on just "one" guitar. Why not just buy a couple of black '78 Les Paul Customs instead, and change the pickup mounting rings, pickguard and toggle switch plate to chrome? At least you'll have two then and it'll only run you about $4500 instead...lol.

That's what I suggested in the second part of my post. Get a used '78 LPC for $2000, change all the stuff, and you'll get a guitar that is CLOSER to John Sykes personal guitar than the Custom Shop overpriced so-called replica. It will be made in 1978, not 2006, just like his own. It will have that old wood, the CS replica won't. And if you feel bad about buying used, just remember that Sykes' guitar was a used one as well. He didn't get it new. He got it USED. Just read the story here if you don't know:

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I think a few fellow forumite here owns an Edwards John Sykes model. I would strongly suggest you talk to him first. The Les Paul version looks like a **** nice guitar but I'd highly doubt it's worth justifying spending 6 times as much as you would for an Edwards model for only a marginal improvement.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I can understand wanting the best, and a Custom Shop LP Custom arguably has the highest chance of turning out best.

But I cannot justify the price difference between this model and a normal Custom Shop LP Custom.

I think his nick is BloodRose. I also remember him posting a lot of pics of his guitar and telling how happy he was.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Dont do it mate, it's not worth getting in debt for a guitar, someone else on this forum posted pics of the edwars sykes model he owns & it is a beauty.

Dont set yourself up to be working all the time to feed "the man" - you wont have time to play the guitar just to pay off the loan.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

The Edwards play great, Bloodrose now has my Sykes Edwards, plus it comes loaded with a Duncan Distortion set and will run you under $1K shipped. I just picked up an old Orville Sykes model, very nice guitar, a little played and beat, but I got it under $600.

The VOS models are pretty much made for collecting, not playing, no $6K guitar is made to be played IMHO, especially at 17. At your age, I would go for the Edwards or a used Burny, Greco, Orville, or whatever, or at least a used 70s or 80s LP Custom.

FWIW, yes, those Gibson Sykes models are $6k and up, http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...s-Paul-Custom-Aged-Electric-Guitar?sku=517971, actually, $6K is a pretty good deal.

Well.. I will buy that guitar, its been my dream guitar ever since I started playing and I want it :)

I know a loan is a big commitment, but luckily I make a big pile of cash in my new job so I can afford it without the big expenses.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I'm your biggest supporter here Axl, but I'm with the crowd here. Get a custom, modify it, and I'm sure we can find some really cool 80s stuff you can spend the rest of the money on. ;)

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I think that's the worst mistake almost anyone could hope to make :laugh2: at that age especially... at that PRICE... I honestly just can't fathom...

Whatever. I bought a car at that age for $10k and 5 years later want to get rid of it too... But I could drive that... This really is astounding logic, but since when is stuff like that logical...

At least it'll hold its value...

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Okay let me put it up like this:

A regular Custom is approx. 4750dollars here.

A VOS Custom is 5400dollars.

The Sykes is 6500dollars (Miscalculation by me before)

The sykes aint that much more expensive, I can get some rebate on it, and it holds it value greatly.

And I dont know ho to explain it, ever since I saw this guitar in a catalogue I have loved it, and who can explain love?

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

yes, logic, a 6500 dollar guitar IS a deal compared to that $4750 guitar that you should be considering :laugh2:

interesting priorities is all I'm saying, and in the next 5 years I can imagine that your priorities can potentially change immeasurably to be throwing around money like that... As can taste... But yes, at least it'll hold its value... Just seems like a lot of money for a hollow sort of satisfaction when there are alternatives.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Spending $4750 on a guitar to play is just as crazy. You're talking car money here.

At least watch for one on ebay, I've seen them there under $5K new.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

Hey I can speak from your point of view. I make a nice amount of dough from working my ass off and saving all my money and eventually purging it onto nice gear purchases. I really wanted a '59 Les Paul or a historic LP Custom (black beauty) for a little while before I had my Goldtop and Strat. I had close to the money needed for either of them and was going to get it, but I didn't. I went ot the store played them all in the store, and would up with a $2300 R7 instead of wasting it on a 59 LP (playability and sound vs marketing bs). Then I used that other money to help fund a 57 Tweed Twin amp, then I had my main rig. Then with a whole nother summers wages I got enough money for my '56 Strat. Now I don't think I'll buy a guitar or amp until well into my 20s and I have a great set up for gigs and recording and with those 2 guitars I can get any sound I want for the most part.

Definitely not worth the 6K for the chrome parts. How bout a nice LP and something on the other side of the spectrum? Please, do wait a coupl'o weeks or months before buying something. This seems like a phase of serious GAS (usually is the case with signature models) which will pass soon. Maybe it's not. But still, there are BETTER guitars out there for the money and youll be better off buying an R7 or R8 or whatever and saving the rest towards something else. Good luck getting to your decsion

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..

I would also do more research into this "holds its value greatly thing". If it is kept minty and in collectible condition, it may, but probably not as well as the aged one. If it is played, it may be worth a little more than a regular LPC, but it will drop alot of its value because it is a collectible instrument.

I'm with Gunny, wait a few weeks for the GAS to pass and then see how you feel about it. If it were me, I would shop for a used black LPC for under $2K, then buy chrome parts for it. The chrome parts would probably be under $100 + shipping unless you went got Tone Pros or a Gotoh 510 bridge/tailpiece set. You could still get by for under $200 in parts. I guess I really don't understand the whole "it's gotta be new" thing for a player guitar. If you have the cash, cool, if not, a loan that big is crazy. What if you end up needing a car before you get it paid off? Or, better yet, save up for it first, and shop for the best price.

I know you don't like reading this stuff, but honestly, we're saying it because we like you, and we don't want to see you make a huge mistake that you may really regret in a year or less.

Re: I am about to order my new Les Paul..
