Alright I'll keep it quick cause im dying of exitement!!!!

Ok I need to give u a little backround first:

My friend (who plays al ittle guitar) foudn this pedal in his shed (his dad used to play) and asked if he could use it, his dad said "sure"...He brought it to shcool and its a vintage ibanez flanger!!! (70's-80's)m, now instead of telling him its snot worth much and **** i drooled over it lol DAM ME!!. SOO he also tells me (month or two ago) that his dad has a "big" amp in his shed (which we foudn out was head and cab because one had no speakers in it and the big part had speakers in it. So I was saying "imagine if it was a marshall?". Well I ask him today and......he said its a marshall!! HOLY ****!!! There could be a vintage Marshall i na SHED 5 min away from my house! I wasnt playing dumb this time...

So I'm like "ooo.. thats cool ,too bad it was a newer one" and told him how the newer ones are better and of course hebelives me because everyone thinks new is better. He also says next time hes at his dads (his rents juts split up) hee'll show me and said it still works. Well his dad doesnt play anymore so I'm REALLY excited about this, perhaps I cna rip him off and get a awsome marshall for low price?

Its not nice to Rip off your friends

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Comprehension of karma is rarely understood by those that typically lack the sufficient time in their lives from which to trade upon it.

Nice gear will take you a long way in this world. But good friends will carry you farther than the best peice of gear ever made ever could.

If you're serious about doing the right thing it would be good to hear about how you intend to do as such.

You're on and off on your comment IMO. This forum is about partially getting good deals/info/opinions on items, but its not about ripping off people.

Although 70s and 80s sport some good Marshalls, it may not even be for you kido. If you're a metal head, IMO a Marshall JMP wouldn't cut ti too much. But if it's a JCM800 go for it, see what I mean. Also, just because its an 80s or 70s Marshall, that doesn't mean it'll sound so hot. Some JCM800s don't sound as hot as some other JCM800s. Keep that in mind.
who says a jmp cant sound good for metal? you listen to some early maiden and report back!

and guys. stop jumping on the dude. seriously. he was exited, his wording was off, he apologised. now stop it and wish him good luck that he gets the amp

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Thanks Davey! EXACTLY, my wording was off and I cleared it all up, especially the "friend" status and how I'm not actually trying to "rip off". I'm glad some of you read the whole thread.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

I still say someone's trying to sucker someone else out of something. "Okay, bad choice of words." That's your out? Just let us know how well the scam worked for you and tell us how the amp sounds.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

I mean a Marshall JMP alone, plugged in straight, nothing in the line. Sure with a pedal or two itd work fine for metal.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

KGMESSIER why the hostility man??

And if I end up getting it I'll be glad to tell you how it sounds.

It was just a story about a guy with a Marshall in his shed I maye be able to aquire for cheap. Simmer boys.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

I got my 65 Deluxe the same way but i was honest with the seller who was a friend of a friend... It was given to this guy by an old lady he had helped moved and it didn't work... It had been in the attic for ages and when this old couple were going into a retirement home he helped the family move... They gave him the amp as they knew he was in a band, (playing bass). So i went for a Jam with these guys and he asked if i could get it working... I said no as it was blowing fuses, but said you could take it to a good repair shop i know and gave him the address. He later asked me how much it would cost to get it going, and i knew it needed a new cord, new tubes, and maybe something bigger was blowing fuses so i laid everything out for him that i thought was wrong with it and that $200-$300 it may cost you to get it repaired and running well... He freaked and said there is no way he would ever spend that much cash on this old thing....

so later on that day i asked him if he was not going to repair it what would he want for it if he was going to sell it... I didn't know what year it was or if it was worth anything to be honest... I just knew it was an older Fender that was broken. I told him if it was in working order i thought it could be worth $700 or maybe a bit more... but since it needs repair and something big could be wrong with it i offered him $300 Canadian... He said go to the bank machine and it's yours...

Later on i had it repaired.... first trip to the repair shop they retubed it, new cord, and changed a few caps, A few weeks after i got it back it started to sound funny so i stopped using it... Took it back to the shop and they replaced a lot more caps... That fixed it... The tech said some Cap was allowing higher voltage to the tubes and my new tubes were toasted....

All together i ended up paying $450 Canadian to have it retubed, and filter caps changed, and a few small parts i added myself that cost me $50..... So i paid $750 in total to get it working.... About 6 months later i get a call out of the blue from my buddy's buddy asking about the amp and wanted to know how much it cost me to get it repaired... I told him close to $500.... then he asked what that year and model of amp is worth and i said the local store said in the shape it's in they would sell it for $900-(which is the honest price they told me) as the vinyl is all peeled off the side... I also told him what the books say it would be worth if it was mint. He was cool with everything.. he was a bit worried he had sold me a million dollar amp as someone was telling him i may of shafted him out of a lot of cash for a great amp.... Later he said he was glad he never spent the money on repairing it, as he would of never of been able to afford the $450-$500 to repair it and would of had to sell it anyways. I also told him that i will be spending more on it to cherry it out and make it sound better.... new speaker and stuff..

Over the last 7 years things change i now know i could get as high as $1200 Canadian now for this amp, in the shape it's in. I was 100% honest with the seller.... he did come back and was full of questions later on and a bit of regret selling the amp.... But with everything on the table and all the repair bills i have settled his mind.....

Becareful when buying stuff from friends....

'A required maturity level to own vintage gear?'

No way dude. That's just pompous. You get the gear you get however you get it, and if you have something and you want to modify it that's YOUR choice.

I wish there were MORE vintage guitars routed for humbuckers and floyds, or cool refinishes that you can't get from the factory. It's like, seeing a dude with a normal cherry red SG is cool I guess, but everybody and their gramma has a cherry red SG. If I saw somebody playing a GREEN SG with Telecaster pickups, I'd say "Wow what a unique and interesting player," because he took something he kind of liked and made it into something that's totally his.

Are you gonna NOT change the PUPs in YOUR PERSONAL GUITAR COLLECTION just in case the value appreciates in 50 years? HELL NO. You're gonna be just like the rest of us and mod and tweak your axe until it's exactly how you like it. That's half of the fun of being a guitarist.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Wow, this thread has turned into so many side topics, it's not even funny :smack:

Kamanda~SD, you seem to me like you know the difference between right and wrong, but this is all your decision. That's the great thing in life, you can do whatever you want and nobody has the right to tell you otherwise. People talk about lots of "steals" they get and maybe this is your time to get one. Feel out the dad for what he wants for the Marshall and go from there, if the father is happy with a certain price and you're happy, what's the big deal?

Just because you're younger doesn't mean you automatically won't appreciate it, I don't buy that for a second. You can get a deal without offering anything like a pickup. Just be honest and you'll probably get what you want + some big karma points (it may not even make much sense to you now, but I think a lot of us strongly believe in that stuff). Besides, think of it this way, you're 15 and even if you told that father what you thought it was worth, I'm not sure he'd take it for the gospel truth (and that will work in your favor... the father will probably cut you a better deal if you show that you're trying to be honest and he may even reward you for it).

Sorry for hijacking the post K.

I agree where you're coming from and I agree that if it's you're axe, you can do what you want, and should do what you want.

In case anyone's interested, LOL, the point is that many vintage amps and guitars were modded before they were really vintage. In 1984 I had an 81 JCM 800 that I had an effects loop intalled in. In 1984 the JCM 800 surely was not a vintage amp and the effects loop was needed at the time. Around the same time, if someone put an effects loop in a 68 Marshall or put a floyd on a 64 strat, those wouldn't have been considered as terrible as it is today.

Empty pockets, while you are right, just realize that Golden Boy and I are much more nostalgic than you simply because we are much older than you. These pieces don't hold the same place in your heart as ours simply because these are things that we grew up using, we loved them and now we don't want to see the remaining few pieces changed. Bottom line again, is that if you've got a real 57 strat and you wanna paint it green and put a floyd on it then go ahead and do it. That is your right and nobody can take that away. You've also got to accept the fact that not too many people are going to like that idea and will think you're nuts. Taking the value part away, some of us would kill to have a vintage piece stock (I'm not one of them but I can see where they come from) and get a bit emotional seeing one "hacked up".

Don't get upset, just try to see where the other guy is coming from.

Personally, I've got a 77 Gibson doubleneck. I hated the sound of the pickups so I removed them and put Duncan Seths and Antiquities in it. I love it now. Holy crap do some people think I'm nuts for doing that! I even sold the pickups--that made me certified insane, LOL.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Thanks, Glad some of you understand but WhoFan summarized pretty much what I'm going to do!! I'm not oging to tell hhim its an absolute peice of **** and give him $100 for it, I will tell him that it does have some values but its been sitting in a shed for many years and it will need to be re-tubed and biased for sure. Remember I have to go see it first, maybe it really is a PoS!

EDIT: 75LesPaul thats exactly what I meant by my modding comment that when people mod it its usually fialry new and they dont know what it will be worth!! Anyway s I got to go for now but I'm glad to see what has come of this.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

yep.

sometime in the late 70's a certain david michael murray 'butchered' a 57 strat by routing it for a HSH setup... and put metal mount rings on it too.

around the same time, people moded 60's marshall amps to give more ..

lets not get into van halen..

or what adrian did to a certain gibson gold top.

things like that would be considered complete blasphemy today, but back then, it was making it work for you. yea. years passed and gear became more pricey and you can get various things for cheap that already has the basic setup you want.
back then you didnt.

so if someone mods his guitar or amp, whatever it might be, to have it work for HIM. you got ZERO say in it.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

I think it's cool that you have the opportunity to get a good deal on a half-stack. The only thing I'll say though is tread carefully. I can understand all the guys who say that you probably haven't had enough life experience to appreciate the seriousness of some situations, but it doesn't mean I fully agree. Needless to say at 17 I've had my share of experience, so just make sure you keep everyone happy in your dealings.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Why don't you...

1) find out what the amp is
2) talk to his dad about it
3) sit down and try out the amp a lot
4) show your geninue interest to his dad (if you eventually like the amp)

i believe that if you show enough sincerity, you'll get the amp at a good price. most older musicians do appreciate if they can help out the younger generation to become one.

furthermore, if you appreciate a piece of equipment well, you will play better with it and not sell it on impulse. where i live, lots of people buy Ibanez guitars like once a year (i seriously blame the local guitar shop for this) and sell it like within a month. the concept of equipment doing wonders for their "tone" has gone over the top of their heads.

for now, just find out the model, do your research online, seek a price where you will be paying a reasonable price for the amp should you be getting it.

I must've just worded my post wrong. ;)

I'm just giving you sh*t...probably more than you deserve. Sorry man, we're cool. You may give me a virtual slap across the face. I deserve it.

Seriously though, if you do end up getting the amp let us know how it sounds. I'd love to get my hands on a JCM800 too!

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

You know what? I don't think there is any Marshall half stack in a shed in the first place and that this is all a 15 year olds wishful thinking. Just a gut feeling.

Don't mean to be unkind or anything like that...it's just that the whole thing seems a little far fetched.

It's gonna turn out to be something other than a valuable Marshall...or maybe nothing at all.
