Maybe you're misunderstanding me, I have no problem with taking an off the shelf instrument and carving it up. I have a problem with someone taking an old guitar and carving it up.
well, that one i do agree with. you have to be plain stupid to take a vintage strat and route it for a floating floyd.. or take a plexi and mod the shyt out of it

i didnt argue that part. i argued the fact that people moded gear when it was available for cheap, to get something that wasnt available in stock form.

It's not about the resale but acknowledging that you're changing a tool to be and do something it was never intended to do.
the tool does what you intend to do with it. if all i can have is a stock (apart of the pickups) guitar, then it's no fun. and i for one cant afford 10 guitars to get all of the styles they were intended to do. i will take one, or two and make them cover various styles.
if it means putting a kahler on a les paul.. then be it
and preserving it, so it might be worth something within the next half century? f*ck that. i for one, am not ashamed of my mods. it's what i need and what i want at that given time. it's mine and should be of no concern to you in any way

Enjoy your mistakes....

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Regarding mods on vintage guitars and amps: don't do anything irreversable. That means no extra holes and no enlarging of existing routs.

But that said, I've made changes to every guitar I own. In fact, I just put Barden pickups and a Barden bridge on my '54 Tele.

I didn't add a screw hole or anything like that though...it was just a matter of removing some parts and putting new parts on and using the exact same screw holes.

The old parts will go right back on again when I die and my wife or estate sells the guitar.

Until then, the Bardens are staying in this '54 Tele. It's the best it has ever sounded.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

I gotta admit, I must be one of the few "old guys" that doesn't quite get the "vintage" thang. At least as far as guitars go. Would I mod a '31 Duesenberg Fixed Head Coupe to retrofit Cragar SS's? Of course not. But a '63 Strat? Why not? Unless of course it was played by Jimi at Woodstock or something. That is, if it had actual historical value. But a garden variety old Strat was a blue-collar instrument made by a blue-collar kind of guy. IMHO - I can recreate an exact duplicate today, that will play, "feel", and sound just like the original. Not true of the Duesy.

I reserve the right to change my mind if, and when, I ever get to actually play a "vintage" axe. :D

i agree with whoever made the point that if you are gonna drop the cash on a vintage instrument or amp that you are going to actually use, it should not need to be changed. some vintage stuff just has this certain feel and aura about it, must be the MOJO. but i have felt the same thing in some newer guitars that have alot of character. If you are going to spend that much money on a vintage item, you should be so happy with it from the minute that you leave the store that you wouldnt ever want/need to alter it. Its a big trap to buy something that you think you can mold to sound however you want. Sometimes you can change it, but other times you could just ruin a perfectly good vintage item

my mistakes?

why so?
so i can apretiate a guitar 20-40 years down the road? should i keep it in the closet that long so i can apretiate it when i'm older? f*ck that.
if i want to make the guitar a player that fits my needs, nobody in the universe can stop me. is that ignorant of the instrument? i dont think so. why the hell do replacement parts and aftermarket parts exist then?

sorry, but i dont buy that "guitars are on loan" thing.
leaving new-er guitars stock so you can apretiate them later is nothing but bullsh!t to me.

there are as always two types of people.
if i mod a strat .. in any way..
some will say WTF did he do. he ruined the instrument, while the others will say, cool. nice job. enjoy it.

go and tell van halen he "wasnt allowed" to mod guitars back in the day..
go and tell jimi it's heresy to burn a perfectly good strat.

through acts & modding like that those guitars became priceless. so, obviously. people dont give a damn, what 'purists' such as you think about moding

also.. if you spend such a massive amount of money on a vintage guitar. you first make sure that it is what you want, you dont buy vintage gear, with modding in mind.
if you drop any large ammount of money on a piece of gear, you first make sure that it's what you want as is (call it factory modded if you will) and maybe a change of pickups is all it takes to personalise it, but if it's a medium instrument, or you are dead set that you are going to change one of your existing instruments into something else, i say do it. if it's a player, it's a player. nobody buys new stuff today and thinks of how much it's going to be worth in a couple of decades

My body is on loan? Really? You mean, after I'm done someone else gets it in a manner where the physical aesthetics are meaningful?

Unless were talking about a funeral director with a penchant for necrophilia then your statement is false.

Actually, my body is one of the few things I own that will effectively be worthless to anyone after I'm gone. No one else is going to want it when I'm dead.....especially after a few weeks when it gets pretty stinky.

When I'm gone my guitars will be worth something, probably more than they what I paid for them.

I'm far from covered.

I landed next to the Enigma in the mosh pit at a Nine Inch Nails show....

....now THAT dude is covered.

What kind of a friend lies to a guy by telling him "newer is better" with the hopes of ripping him off? Not cool.

Exactly the kind of "friend" you don't want. Even at 15, you'd think he'd know better. I guess thats why the old saying goes that you can count your friends on 1 hand.

What does age have to do with it, Lew?

Probably has something to do with the fact that alot (not all) "kids" think short term, but the long haul. This "kid" probably figured he'd screw his friend over and all would be fine, but eventually, what comes around goes around.

Sorry, Lew, didn't mean to hijack, but I couldn't resist :)

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Martinsixstringscustoms: As with most people who dont know much about guitars (or **** about fiddles as Zakk said about ozzy) he ALREADY THOUGHT newer was better, I didnt say to him "man too bad its old cause that means it sucks" because then why would I go see it? Thats just a stupid lie because he'll figure it out, hes not dumb!! He made a comment along the lines of "yeah man ill show you it, my dad doesnt use it but its old so it wont be as good as a new amp" and i was just like "yeah, too bad". It's not like I'm feeding him lies because hes not completely dumb. I do see what you mean though.

Can't believe this stupid thread about an amp that probably doesn't exist has reached almost 100 posts!
