I Bought A Strat

Actually I bought two, but I only have a question about one.

It's a 93 American Standard and the pickups, more especially the bridge, suck hard. I've got Texas Specials in the other one and they sound 100% better, much thicker and fuller.

I think I want to make the 93 a hotter more rock oriented version. I've about decided I want a mini 59 in the bridge but was wondering what other 2 single coils would best match up with it.

Re: I Bought A Strat

I'd put Li'l '59 Mini Jr.'s in all three positions, then get a Superswitch and wire it up for coil splitting:

- neck series
- neck parallel
- one coil neck || one coil middle
- middle
- bridge

+ split for bridge
+ blower switch

I would pull the pickguard and go H-S-S

Re: I Bought A Strat

Favorite bridge pickup in a strat so far is the p-rails. YMMV.

As far as pickups for the neck and middle with the '59 bridge, I can't help but think the duckbucker was made for the middle position with the screamin' demon (single sized) in parallel for the neck.

Half of that is because they all look alike, and half is because when I looked at SD's product page I was all like "woah they make a single sized screamin' demon" and I was totally curious and thought if I acted like I knew what I was talking about I could maybe cajole you into playing guinea pig.

Re: I Bought A Strat

If you're going for a Lil '59 I think I'd stick with SSL-1/2's...

If you want rockier then the Everything Axe Set is a good way to go. JB Jnr/Duckbucker/Lil '59.

I had that in my Legacy for a long time before I decided to go back to SSS with Surfers.

DiMarzio True Velvet Set.

You'll thank me. :)

Yup. Best "sort-of-classic" Strat pickups I've ever used. Though I prefer installing three neck models over a "proper" matched set. I don't care for an over-wound bridge pickup or for a RW/RP middle pickup.

Re: I Bought A Strat

You've got Les Pauls for your hotter tones. Keep those Strats as true Strats.

Re: I Bought A Strat

Congrats.

If I'm not mistaken, the 93 has a swimming pool route so anything goes with a pickguard change. Also, while you're at it, moving the middle PU tone control to the bridge is worthwhile (to me).

SSL-1 is as good of a starting point as anything.

The next step is to throw away all your Les Pauls. You are making progress. Soon your transformation will be complete.

Re: I Bought A Strat

I used to have a Kramer Classic that had a full set of SSL-1s in it... maple neck was too bright for me, but I got a lot of compliments on the sound of that guitar. Maybe a good compliment for the '93?
