I can't mic a guitar anymore

Re: I can't mic a guitar anymore

That's probably why you can't get a tone you're happy with. You should really get a real 57. They are only $100... It will make a difference.

Re: I can't mic a guitar anymore

thanks for additional links and input!

I typically use a 57 clone straight into my fostex mr-8, do some stuff in logic express afterwards (varies a lot what that may be).

here's my latest non-mic'ed test, for what it's worth:

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=7358779&q=hi

not sure if I'll keep along these lines, but with some distorty midrangy bass I think it may work. for this dealio I'm likely just gonna do a bunch of takes, including mic'ed (incorporating some if the new ideas here) as well as directs and see what pairs well with what. probably a combo burrito of some sort.
ok for mic test my 2 cents:

1. use same drums with more dynamics cause it can shape metal tones. do 2 clips - one with line6 and one with micing. like seymour duncan pickups. that way the variables are lessened.

drums with the deep bass and treble snares. metal is like that - youtube videos of live shows just dont sound right alot of time for metal since dynamics for djent heavy picking dont show. if it was blues the video would be more acceptable though I think, because of the nature of the music.

2. What is your demo for? to find other bandmates? Knowing the purpose of and goal is half the battle. You seem pretty concerned about the sound. quick fix: I think if everything on your demo sounds like variations of Atlanta Song it will be a winner.

3. Atlanta song dynamics are alot better than other songs like this demo etc. I dont think the vocals are adding to your music really. Dynamics are really important

so if its a shootout between atlanta song and your other stuff like pentecostal snake, atlanta song wins by a big landslide over all the other demos you have.

even if its modeling. cause it has the chug and is well written and no spoken word/ punk vocals? not sure. but I think the tone is better - dynamics (palm muting is like listening to a bullet - in person it sounds like a machine gun but far away in a building sounds like someone beating a bat on the side of a refrigerator) ...dynamics of loud/soft and amount of high frequency fizz is important for the distortion.

4. compression, amp distortion, and eq are ultra important. its like a recipe, yaknow? prolly needs alot less amp distortion and more compression, and messing with the eq - stuff like that makes a huge diff.

5. ya mic issues - I see used sm-58s on craigslist and ebay - may make the diff

Re: I can't mic a guitar anymore

thanks for the input! drums on this one are half-set (groove monkey pre-recorded loops), but I can take out some of the squashing I did to get the dynamics back. I could program the drums in ezd like the ATL song, but that's a lot of time and I don't get my $30 worth of drum loops I haven't used yet.

line 6 use will be tough since I sold my line 6 head.

atlanta song was a weird combo of the free jcm900 sim and a guy helping me with 5150 reamping blended together, but I might be able to do it again. given your comments, I may just have someone reamp all the gits.

I also realized that with the direct test I did, I accidentally had a cab sim on my DI box and then sent it through my amp sim! not good.

demo is just to pass to friends and people that helped on it (oh, and for sale for $4 at my friend's punk/hardcore distro). and there'll be a free download package for whoever wants to just d/l it. I know the vocals are the weakest link, but I don't want to release an instrumental ep. I write tunes with vocals and I consider most tunes of mine as incomplete without them. plus, the ep is pretty much done except for this one song (the 5 songs are zombielection, PSHN, cyber dumpster, the ATL song, and still thrashin'). but it's good to know on at least one song I may have found something that works well, and I need to shoot more for that recipe in the future.

Cool man. ATL song is awesome. I heard your ATL and knew ezd was right for me, and had to buy it after. Ive only used ezd for 3 sittings really (3 songs I made) cause Ive been so busy: I just take 2 loops and make a song, then edit out those 2 loops later on with other loops is what I do. Ctrl-c and ctrl-v (copy and paste) are my best of friends along with other copy/paste functions in Reaper ...after I move around a bass drum hit here and there in the loop. Doesn’t take me that long. But I hear ya, it can take awhile ymmv and getting better drums and already loops bought and such. I found dfh for $70 at abesofmaine.com and MF matched the price so I went with that. I use line6 toneportGX which cost me $50 for all my guitar and bass. Not sure if that will help you too much but ATL sounds awesome whatever you were doing there. Im definitely a fan of the KISS principle and not spending a lot of money unless good cause.

that’s cool I was wondering about that. Nice of you to make demos for friends. Im in the same catch22 for vocals myself, I know my vocals are the weakest link and Im not a big fan of long guitar solos so I need to make improvements one way or the other myself, make the music more complex. You have a good recipe for ATL dude, keep it up! Ive listened to ATL a bunch of times now lol

Re: I can't mic a guitar anymore

did you use line 6 on bender? that's a pretty sick sound!

thanks man. yes, line6toneportGX for bender. I did 7 rhythym tracks, some not panned, some panned right, some panned left.

for shaping your tone, the key is the Equalizer!! It makes a HUGE difference in shaping your tone. and vocals too. I still havent mixed any of my songs really though :) - just quickly adjusted the sound levels using my $16 headphones; and not my monitors which is a big no-no in the recording music world. been short on time lately these last few months, only time for quick breaks. Ill post the final product online next weekend with vox.
