Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

Totally professional job, man! Very impressive. I love the before/during/after photos, too. As Jonesey said, way above average ambition. LOVE IT!!!

That is one of the best looking cabs I've seen, the salt n pepper grille cloth look very classy. Excellent job.

Someone asked me who "Jim" was.

Jim builds only the best guitar speakers IMO, and it is a wealth of Marshall/Celestion knowledge. http://www.scumbackspeakers.com/index.html

Jim even builds his own cabs now.

I think that's the nicest Marshall Cab I've seen. Red is my favourite colour and I do love the look of the 1960s Marshall cabs in any colour or size.

I have to ask......how did you do the top and bottom piping? There's no grooves on that cab, so did you saw them in? How hard was it to do that part? I'm even amazed that you filled in those half moons near the handles! Wow!

Oh yeah....and please post pics of your orange recovered head. I missed that the first time around!
I've retolexed amps before and that stuff is difficult!....especially the rounded corners!

What kind of glue did you use for the flat panels, and did you use stronger glue for the corners?

I suck at the "how to" threads, so a bunch of crap got skipped.

The newer A cabs have those recessed pads up top, but the "vintage" cabs of course don't. I filled those in with wood, and skimmed over with wood filler.

Then I used a 1/8 router bit to create the piping channels. You have to cut the rounded front channel by hand, but it is easier than it sounds. The channel is exactly 1 5/8” from the edge of the cab to the outside edge of the channel. (1/8” wide, and 1/8” deep)

The little “half moon” cut outs had to be dealt with because of the larger metal handle. I have no idea why Marshall simply does not offer the same plastic handle in metal, but Jim from Scumback now offers direct metal replacement handles that drop right in.

I used regular ol’ tolex glue from Mojo, and applied it with a cheap short bristle brush. The corners are the ***** of course, so I do those last. Once I have the cuts correct, I use just a dab of super glue, and then press them into place. Jim shows the way to do them correctly in this thread.

I used real Marshall parts for everything but the casters and the red tolex. Marshall no longer offers correct red levant, but they do have red elephant.

I ordered the red from http://www.partsisparts.net/products/109/Marshall-Amp-Covering-Red-Levant.htm and it is a dead match for the “real deal”. No one else that I know of carries the correct color red, so if you want actual Marshall red, get it from Parts is Parts.

The casters are the pop in kind (vs screw), and can be bought here http://www.tubesandmore.com/
Search for part # P-HW01S

What it looked like after the old tolex was removed.

After much scrapping, sanding, and filing.

Marshall uses MDF for the back plate, and that was not worth saving. I hope none of you ever have to attempt glue removal from something like MDF.

I made a new one from the correct birch ply.

All finished up and ready for the amp chassis.

Notice the black and white piping along with the incorrect "traffic cone" orange... (all wrong)

Marshall has long stopped offering orange tolex, but I found an accurate reproduction. The rest is all genuine Marshall.

Here is a real deal '60's version for comparison.

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I post these threads not only to show off what I did, but to show others that anyone with a little effort and some patience can do the same.

I had never wrapped anything like a guitar cab before this, so it is a learning process for sure.

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

I recovered a handful of Matchless amps and Fender amps. In pics, it always looks so easy, but when you run into things like bubbles, bad cuts, and flaps that won't lay down without carpet seaming glue, it gets frustrating really fast! You did an amazing job on all of them.

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

ya when I get the $$ Im prolly gonna get a mesa custom shop super croco latex spandex with wood engraving and shiny metalz to make teh chickz drool

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

Right now I have a Charvel torn apart on my bench, but I have reached a point where I can work on something else.

I will try and knock out the red headshell this weekend.

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

Nice job man!

I've got a question tho... I'm looking to recover a 1960 in white to match my Rhoads head, how much tolex did you have to buy? That's always been the hang-up for me.

Thanks!

Re: I finally got around to restoring one of my 4x12s

You will need four yards for a Marshall 4x12, but I always get one extra just so I have extra for patches or screw ups.

If you are not going to use the older style piping, then you are going to wrap the cab with one piece with a single seam at the bottom.

Wrapping a cab with a single piece is tedious, so be prepared.
